    Reference Number:
    EBI_01120
    Job Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented post-doctoral scientist to develop computational methods for protein variant analyses in three dimensions. We will explore what additional information can be extracted from protein structural data, to reveal the impact of such mutations. The methods are being actively applied to consider new variants found as part of various clinical studies, including those which cause developmental disorders. One challenge is to understand how these variants at the molecular level lead to clinical diseases. This will involve the analysis of variants in ligand binding sites, protein-protein complexes and pathways. We are actively involved in a variety of collaborations with clinical groups across the UK.

This project is a close collaboration with the laboratory of Professor Christine Orengo at University College London (UCL). We will use the data gathered in the CATH resource of protein structural domains to bring additional knowledge to this problem. The successful candidate will join a small team within the Thornton group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK.

We are part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and we are a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry.
    Qualifications and Experience
You will have completed, or be close to finishing a PhD in Bioinformatics, computer science, chemistry, physics or medicine. You should have good knowledge of protein structures and one or more programming languages such as Perl/Python/Java/C/C++. Experience with clinical data and systems biology approaches would also be an advantage.

The ability to work effectively in a small team of bioinformaticians within the Thornton Group and collaborate effectively with researchers at UCL is important. Strong scientific communication skills are a prerequisite as are excellent English and interpersonal skills.
    Benefits
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive stipend, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, and family related benefits where applicable.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
    Application Instructions
To apply please submit a covering letter and CV, with two referees, through our online system.
    Additional Information
Applications are welcome from all nationalities - visa information will be discussed in more depth with applicants selected for interview.

EMBL-EBI is committed to achieving gender balance and strongly encourages applications from women, who are currently under-represented at all levels. Appointment will be based on merit alone.

Applications will close at 23:00 GMT on the date listed above.

It is envisaged that interviews will take place on Thursday, 12th April 2018.

    Blizard Institute
Centre for Genomics and Child Health
    Postdoctoral Research Assistants
    QMUL14070 - Computational
Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Assistants to work on a BBSRC-funded project aiming to identify and functionally characterize the environmental responsiveness of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) variants in the human genome. Both positions will be based within the Centre for Genomics and Child Health in the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
How our genomes respond to stressful environments has a significant impact on health and disease states. Epigenetic down-regulation of ribosomal DNA is a key stress response mechanism in all eukaryotes. The Rakyan and Lowe labs recently found that a suboptimal early-life environment results in increased DNA methylation at the rDNA promoter. Surprisingly, this epigenetic response remains into adulthood and is restricted to rDNA copies associated with a specific genetic variant within the rDNA promoter. Our work identified a novel type of environmentally induced epigenetic dynamics that are dependent on underlying genetic variation (Holland et al., 2016, Science)
We have recently been awarded a BBSRC grant to systematically identify such effects in humans. The project will involve cutting edge approaches that integrate cell biology, functional genomics and epigenomics, long-read nanopore sequencing, and computational biology.
The computational biologist will be based in Dr Lowe’s lab (www.qmul.ac.uk/blizard/staff/centre-for-genomics-and-child-health/staff/robert-lowe.html). The successful candidate will develop computational tools to analyse cutting edge epigenomic, transcriptomic and genomic assays, including third generation long read data. The candidate will need strong computational skills and while previous analysis of biological data is desirable, it is not essential provided the postholder is willing to learn. A good publication record is desirable. Informal enquiries to Dr Lowe are strongly encouraged.
The candidates will work in a world-class epigenetics research environment provided by the QMUL Epigenetics Hub (http://www.blizard.qmul.ac.uk/epigenetics.html), along with exciting new cross-faculty QMUL initiatives in genomics and computational biology (http://www.qmul.ac.uk/lifesciences/). The Blizard Institute is the largest institute of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry and aims to deliver excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and clinical service.
Both posts are full time for 3 years with a start date of 1st May 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting salary will be at the appropriate point for experience within the salary range, £32,956 - £34,764 per annum (Grade 4, spinal point 27-29) inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
Informal enquiries, including arrangements to visit the Institute/Centre, are encouraged and should be addressed to Professor Vardhman Rakyan (v.rakyan@qmul.ac.uk ) or Dr Rob Lowe (r.lowe@qmul.ac.uk )
Details about the Institute can be found at www.blizard.qmul.ac.uk
Application enquiries can be directed to recruitment@qmul.ac.uk

In accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 the University of Edinburgh, as an employer, has a legal responsibility to prevent illegal working and therefore must check that all employees are entitled to work in the United Kingdom (UK).
To do so, the University of Edinburgh requires to see original documents evidencing right to work in the UK before commencement of employment and this is normally carried out at interview. Details will be provided in any letter of invitation to interview.
For further information on eligibility to work please visit our eligibility to work website
If you are not currently eligible to work in the UK, the University has the authority to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to successful candidates who meet the eligibility criteria. The CoS enables candidates to apply for a Tier 2 (general visa) in accordance with current UK Visas and Immigration rules.
For applicants interested in sponsorship information is available on our Working in the UK website
However, if you have previously been sponsored by an employer within the UK but your leave has expired or lapsed and you are no longer in the UK, according to Home Office Visa Immigration rules you cannot apply for sponsorship under any category of Tier 2 for a period of 12 months after the date your visa expired and/or you left the UK.
If you are an academic in the field of sciences; humanities; engineering; medicine; digital technology; or the arts and come from outside the EEA, it may be possible for you to apply for a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa.
The Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa route offers a greater flexibility in your employment compared to other UK immigration routes, meaning you can, for example, move organisation, location and/or job role. By contrast with, a Tier 2 visa where you are ‘tied to a UK sponsor’. Tier 1 provides greater flexibility in undertaking additional engagements, such as collaborations and is intended as a route to settlement. Allowed absences from the UK are up to 180 days per year without losing the eligibility to qualify for settlement, with no restriction on the reason for absence (unlike Tier 2, where any absences from the UK must be for a purpose consistent with the person’s employment or economic activity, including paid annual leave, or for serious or compelling personal reasons).
You would initially need to apply to be endorsed as an internationally recognised leader or emerging leader in your particular field by a designated competent body (Arts Council England, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society, Tech City UK).
Tier1 (Exceptional and Exceptional Promise) Endorsement Criteria
Once successfully endorsed, you are able to apply for a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa. More information on this entry route is available at UKVI Website.
    Conditions of Employment
    Pension Scheme
This role is grade UE07 and therefore the post holder is automatically included in membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subject to the USS membership criteria, unless they indicate that they choose not to join the Scheme.
For further information please visit our Pensions website.
    Salary
The role is grade UE07 and attracts an annual salary of £32,548 to £38,833 for 35 hours each week. Salary is paid monthly by direct transfer to your Bank or Building Society account, normally on the 28th of the month. Salaries for part-time staff are calculated on the full-time scales, pro-rata to the Standard Working Week.
The University reserves the right to vary the candidate information or make no appointment at all. Neither in part, nor in whole does this information form part of any contract between the University and any individual.
