Vacancy Information
The Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCLDIS) invites competitive applications for a fully funded doctoral research studentship (3 years full-time or 6 years part-time) in a research area covered by the department. UCLDIS is a global research leader in information studies and related disciplines.
UCL has a strong culture and tradition of interdisciplinary research, which has been a key factor in it currently attracting more research funding than any other UK university. UCLDIS is itself multidisciplinary, with research collaborations and funded research projects involving subject areas in the arts and humanities, psychology, social sciences, and computer science. It has four distinct research centres (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/dis/research)
Studentship Description
The aim of the studentship will be to conduct research in one of the research areas of UCLDIS, which include:
* archives and records management
* data science and machine learning
* digital humanities
* information science
* knowledge based systems
* library and information studies
* publishing
The research will be supervised by one or more of the academics from UCLDIS with other colleagues from UCL, depending on the subject area.
The studentship is full-time for 3 years or part-time for 6 and pays fees at UK/EU rates. In addition teaching opportunities may be available in UCLDIS during its tenure. Initial registration will be for the degree of MPhil and the candidate will be expected to present a seminar and a written Upgrade report during their second year (or year 3 if part-time) which will allow the upgrade of registration to PhD. General information for doctoral applicants is available on the DIS webpages at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/dis/phd
It is expected that the studentship will commence at the start of the 2018/19 academic year, although other start dates may be possible.
Person Specification
Applicants should have a good first degree, a Master’s degree in a relevant subject, an interest in any of the research areas of UCLDIS, and excellent written, communication, and organisational skills. Any experience of working in an information environment will be an asset.
Eligibility
We welcome applications from non-UK/EU residents, but please note that the stipend pays fees only at UK / EU rates (any shortfall in fees has to be covered by the student). General information for doctoral applicants is available on the DIS webpages at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/dis/phd
There will be a two stage application process for this scholarship. In the first instance, please email a full CV, including the names and contact details of two referees, and a statement of proposed research (not exceeding 750 words) to Kerstin Michaels (k.michaels@ucl.ac.uk).
The successful candidate will then be invited to apply through the usual UCL processes.
For further details of the studentship or an informal discussion please contact Dr Andrew Flinn (a.flinn@ucl.ac.uk)
