Background
Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs at the School of Information Technology (ITE) at Halmstad University is enabling a significant expansion. In 2017, the total research expenditures where over 67 MSEK and the number of students exceeded 800. Over the next two years, the School is expected to grow significantly. The nanoscience group at ITE has for many years had an extended collaboration with the internationally recognized nanoscience research environment NanoLund at Lund University. This PhD position is a joint position between ITE and NanoLund. The PhD student will receive a PhD degree from Lund University.
Description
The employment as doctoral student involves individual research studies (80%) and additional institutional duties or teaching within the subject field (20 %). More specifically, the appointed PhD student will work on advanced design of state-of-the-art optical sensors based on nanotechnology, sensor fabrication in world-class clean rooms at NanoLund and in-depth characterization of the sensor performance. The project, financially supported by the Swedish Research Council (VR), is part of a large research effort, coordinated by NanoLund, targeting ultimate integration of III-V nanowire-based optoelectronics with mainstream silicon platforms. In this project, Halmstad University, Lund University and Harvard University collaborate on developing imaging detectors and integrated optical communication links for on-chip/chip-to-chip communication.
Qualifications
The suitable candidate has a Master´s degree in physics, engineering physics, engineering nanoscience or electrical engineering. Students expecting to finalize their degree during the spring 2019 are also welcome to apply. Only persons who are being admitted, or already have been admitted, to doctoral studies at an institution of higher education may be appointed doctoral students. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 3). The student’s ability to benefit from doctoral studies will be taken into account when we make the appointment. Salary
Doctoral students are employees of the University and paid a salary according to a uniform salary scale, adjusted in relation to the progress in education.
The position includes studies up to a doctoral degree and is annually extended in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §7. The total employment period is four years but may be extended to a maximum of five years if the student performs 20% teaching or other tasks within the university.
