AI in the lab: How are automated approaches changing research and innovation?
Supervised by Philip Shapira and Barbara Ribeiro

This PhD project will investigate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods in scientific research and innovation and its implications – by pursuing three interrelated research objectives. First, the project will explore how and where AI is being introduced into scientific research processes. Second, focusing on leading labs in emerging technologies, the project will examine how AI may influence processes of knowledge discovery, teamwork, the construction of research outputs, and characteristics of innovation. Third, the project will investigate the implications for the management of AI in the lab at institutional, research system, and policy levels. Fieldwork will occur in the UK using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. The PhD project will be undertaken at the AMBS Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIOIR) as part of the Emerging Technologies and Governance group under the supervision of Professor Philip Shapira (supervisor) and Dr Barbara Ribeiro (co-supervisor). The project will contribute to University and AMBS research themes related to the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital revolution including the digital transformation of science and engineering.

The Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) is committed to recruiting the highest calibre PhD students from across the globe. With an excellent international reputation, we strive to produce graduates and researchers of distinction who attain the highest standards of academic excellence, contribute to their disciplines and typify Original Thinking Applied.

This PhD scholarship offers three years’ funding, including doctoral programme tuition fees and a stipend of approximately £15,000 per year for candidates wishing to commence their studies in September 2020. The successful candidate will also receive a generous research support and conference allowance. You will also have access to a robust doctoral research training programme, dedicated research resources, training in transferable skills, visiting speaker seminar programme, and associate with existing research centres and groups. In addition, all students are encouraged to undertake training and development in teaching and deliver teaching and/or research assistantship duties on a paid basis to further enhance their experience in preparation for their future careers.

Entry Requirements. Applications for this project are sought from exceptional UK, EU and international students with an outstanding academic background.

Applicants must have a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) and hold or expect to obtain a Masters level qualification with Distinction. English Language requirements (where required) are IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 623 (100 ibt), PTE 66.

How to apply. Candidates should submit a PhD application for the PhD Science, Technology & Innovation Policy, and indicate that they wish to be considered for this project.

Your application must contain a 3000-word research proposal related to the topic.

Candidates are strongly advised to submit their application as early as possible. Candidates who do not submit the required supporting documents by the specific deadline will not be considered.

Application deadline: 10 January 2020

PhD Scholarship: "Digital Technologies and Innovation: How is 3D Printing Shaping Innovation in Manufacturing?"
Supervised by Silvia Massini and Paulo Bartolo

3D printing is transforming the processes and organisation of production and disrupting innovation processes, supply chains, business models, entrepreneurship, work practices and global value chains. With 3D printing, objects are constructed through the bonding or joining of powders. This allows for large scale customization, based on (minor) software based re-design. It is a form of robotic manufacturing or automation, which can be used to replace high and low labour-cost activities. As the cost of 3D printers rapidly decreases, this technology is revolutionising the way products are fabricated, expanding opportunities for customisation, offering a tremendous potential to reshape economies and industrial landscapes. Three decades since the first 3D printers were commercialised, we still don’t know much about opportunities and challenges of 3D printing to innovation processes, and in particular the technological and knowledge landscape, the evolutionary pattern of 3D inventions, the characteristics of the inventors, how these new technologies relate to existing technologies in terms of knowledge relatedness and capabilities. Using patent document analysis, this doctoral research will fill this gap, develop deep understanding of the 3D printing technological landscape, assess the evolution of key technologies related to 3D printing, identify highly valuable patents and inventors, and understand patent strategies.
