Requirements: Candidates should have a PhD in the data sciences (e.g., Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering), the biomedical sciences (e.g., Genetics, Biochemistry), and/or a MD (or other appropriate clinical degree). Job Duties: The Center for Predictive Computational Phenotyping (CPCP) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a newly established National Institutes of Health (NIH) Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Center for Excellence, has openings for several Postdoctoral Research Associates in areas of biomedical data science. The CPCP was created to significantly advance the state of the art in computational methods for transforming large, heterogeneous, high-dimensional data sources into predictive models for biomedicine. The CPCP has brought together leading data science and biomedical researchers to develop innovative new approaches and tools that are able to discover, and make crucial inferences with models of phenotypes elicited from molecular profiles, medical images, electronic health records, population-level data and other data types. PhD Position: Modeling laminated magnetic circuits accounting for eddy currents and hysteresis

the goal is to develop and validate homogenised characteristic material laws of laminatedferromagnetic materials and introduce them in the software Flux®. These homogenisation techniquesallow to account for the lamination stack while avoiding the geometrical description and mesh of eachof the laminations. The stack is thus considered as a block from the geometrical point of view.

The physical phenomena, appearing in the laminated magnetic circuits and main cause of losses, are:

Static hysteresis: low-frequency variation of the magnetic field;
Dynamic hysteresis: high-frequency variation of the magnetic field, due to the movement of the magnetic walls of the magnetic domains;
Eddy currents.

Two loss computation models for laminated magnetic materials are already available in Flux but aspost-processing operations, i.e. after solving the problem in hand. The loss surface (LS) model is basedon the measurements of the induction B and the derivative of this induction with regard to time dB/dt.Further static hysteresis model has recently been implemented in Flux®, the loss computation exhibitshowever a lack of precision. The models to develop in this PhD thesis should be already applicableduring the resolution process, so that the computation of local quantities (magnetic induction, magnetic field, electric current density) and global quantities (currents and voltages of coils, losses, forces,torques) as a function of time is more accurate.
The material laws for the lamination stacks will be valid in the time domain in order to handle anypossible time variation: periodic or not, sinusoidal or not. The system of equation to solve will then bediscretised in time (time stepped) with a sufficiently small time step.

We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated research with a Master in Electrical Engineering, computational applied mathematics or related field. The candidate should have a strong interest in the modelling of electrical energy systems. Experience with programming languages is a plus.
