    Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

    The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known world wide for its high academic quality and social relevance of its research programs. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. The faculty offers an interdisciplinary setting for its 500 employees, 350 PhD students and 1700 undergraduates. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics. EEMCS: Your Connection to the Future.
    Job description

    Societal security demands surveillance of a variety of emerging threats. The exact needs for surveillance of areas, vehicles, persons, weather, etc. change significantly over time; therefore, one must act quickly and with an appropriate sensor fit when new observation tasks arise. Technology supporting a built-in reconfiguration ability should allow for rapid changes to the system’s capabilities, accommodating the needs for observation without a full system (re-)design. The multi-partner project STARS aims to develop this technology within four years. TU Delft’s contribution is the PhD projects described here.

    The candidate’s research will focus on managing a sensor network’s level of service. Tasks include:
    - contributing to the architecture of allocation of observation tasks in the networked sensor system for optimal quality of service;
    - finding a quantitative method to map observation tasks onto the various network nodes, considering network topology, available communication bandwidth and the capabilities of each node;
    - finding a method to maintain quality of service despite constraints imposed by limited communication bandwidth, by minimising the information content of the messages (and thereby the volume and refresh rate of the messages).
    The theory and method developed will be validated by simulation.
    Requirements

    Applicants should have an MSc degree (or equivalent qualification) with a background in electrical engineering, physics, computer science or mathematics and preferably a strong knowledge and interest in radar systems, sensor networks and numerical methods. It would be an advantage to have programming experience in C/C++ and/or MATLAB and experience in working with radar performance estimation and resources management. Strong communication skills for interaction with the other members of the project’s team are to be expected. The researcher should have an open personality and good English language skills in order to closely cooperate with colleagues and students as well as write project documents.
    Conditions of employment

    The successful candidate will be employed full-time by TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The starting salary for a PhD is €2042 gross per month increasing to a maximum of €2612 gross per month in the fourth year.
    TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
    Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.
