Goldschmidt 2009 — Challenges to Our Volatile Planet
    21 Jun 2009 → 26 Jun 2009; Davos, Switzerland
abstract: The chemistry of the Earth records detailed information about the way in which the Earth formed, reacted and changed to form the planet that we live on today. The secrets of planetary formation and clues about the evolution of life have always held a basic societal fascination. Topically, understanding the Earth's chemistry is essential in uncovering how the mineral and biological world interact, discovering new mineral and energy resources, finding safe drinking water supplies, understanding how and why climate is changing, and developing technologies to mitigate some of the damage that man has done to the planet.
'Our Volatile Planet' represents a topic central to all of these themes. Volatile elements and compounds, such as water, are those which have a tendency to exist in a vapour or gas phase, to boil or dissipate. Water is essential for life, controls planetary scale processes of subduction, earthquakes and even volcanic outpourings. Water forms beautiful mineral formations, transports the suns energy from the equator to the Polar Regions and, when polluted, kills. Our society is also volatile. Wars are fought over mineral resources, cities devastated by Earthquakes, and drought caused by changes in climate. Providing knowledge of Earths complex systems is essential if we are to balance society's needs with the available resources, changing climate and many and diverse, but fragile, ecosystems.
Goldschmidt 2009 brings together over 2000 of the worlds international experts in the chemistry of the Earth to present and debate breaking new work across these topics. It will be held in the Congress Center in Davos. This was the venue for the very successful 2002 meeting, and the Congress Center has now been enlarged in part to be able to accommodate conferences as large as ours.

Annual Symposium — DNA damage: from causes to cures
    15 Dec 2008 → 17 Dec 2008; Robinson College, Cambridge, United Kingdom
    organizer: Biochemical Society
abstract: All cells contain a diverse range of repair pathways that have evolved to optimize their survival following damage to their DNA. These pathways involve the actions of a large number of DNA repair proteins to remove the damage and maintain genome stability. Clearly, when these processes do not function correctly, a likely result will be instability of the genome. A large body of experimental data has demonstrated that such genetic instability can cause a wide variety of human diseases. This meeting will highlight recent major advances in understanding biochemical details about how DNA repair intersects with cellular pathways that lead to cancer or ageing. The meeting is particularly timely since it is now apparent that these biochemical processes offer significant potential for novel therapies to treat diseases such as cancer.

    Toxikologische Wirkung chemischer Stoffe
    25 Sep 2008; Leipzig, Germany

    BioNanoTox
    23 Oct 2008 → 24 Oct 2008; Little Rock, United States
abstract: BioNanoTox lies at the interface of a variety of disciplines ranging from biology to chemistry, toxicology, computational sciences, mathematics, engineering, nanotechnology and biotechnology. Although undeniably multidisciplinary, this nascent field of research has had the tendency to be locked within the narrow remnants of each of its constitutive disciplines. The specific overarching aim of the BioNanoTox Conference is thus to generate new vigorous interactions between the disciplines that contribute to BioNanoTox. We expect this to be an important international and multi-disciplinary scientific and educational event. The 2008 year's program will highlight the BioNanoTox unique vantage point of looking into interdisciplinary foundation of fundamental and translational research.

    CHI’S PROTEIN EXPRESSION EUROPE
    20 Oct 2008 → 21 Oct 2008; Lisbon, Portugal
abstract: Great strides have been made in the expression of proteins for structure and characterization studies, as well as for therapeutics and diagnostics. However, with these strides have come new obstacles. Higher throughput expression and purification, as well as more flexible expression systems and techniques are in even greater demand now to support the needs of the research pipeline. It has become even more important to prevent problems in protein expression by wise choices in data analysis well before the task goes into the laboratory. This conference will explore the newest data and innovations relating to the expression and characterization of proteins for biological understanding and therapeutics, as well as strategies to make the eventual expression of these proteins more effective, efficient and trouble-free. www.healthtech.com

    Chemotactic Cytokines 2008
    21 Sep 2008 → 26 Sep 2008; Aussois, France
abstract: Chemokines are a family of approximately 50 proteins that differ from other cytokines in that they act on G protein-coupled seven transmembrane (7TM) spanning receptors. Their principal role is to direct leukocyte trafficking in the body, and they are thus pivotal to development and the establishment of the immune system. However their excessive activity results in the establishment of inflammation. Through studies in animal models using tools such as genetically modified mice, neutralizing antibodies and receptor antagonists, they have been shown to play a role in diseases such as asthma, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disorder and arthritis, as well as many others. They are also involved in diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases such as AIDS, where they play a role beyond inflammation. Their involvement in the CNS and in apoptosis also demonstrates activity beyond cell recruitment. Since 7TM receptors are one of the cornerstones for drug discovery, they provide a very attractive target for therapeutic intervention, and programs are now moving into the clinic, with the first approval by the FDA achieved in 2007. They are also suitable targets for biological therapeutics, and again monoclonal antibodies are currently being tested in clinical trials.
