KTH The School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) seeks a PhD student in Computer Science

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. The activities of the school focus on higher education and research within the traditional core areas of numerical analysis and computer science; from theory building and analysis of mathematical models to algorithm construction, implementation and simulation. The Department for Parallel and Distributed Computing (PDC) performs applied research in parallel and distributed computing methodologies and tools, with a particular focus on programming support (methods and tools), resource management, performance tools, distributed data handling, and wide area distributed computing and networking.
Research Project

The goal of this project is to study data security aspects in wide area (cloud) computing. When dealing with data over distributed systems confining possible access and storage of data to a certain (geographic) domain is an important feature to ensure protection of potentially sensitive data. Examples include medical data that may not be stored outside the realm of the hospital. Data protection on shared systems (such as cloud systems) is another important topic of this work. The project will cover both theoretical aspects of data protection and privacy as well as practical implementations of prototype systems.
The candidate will join a collaborative project between PDC and the Theoretical Computer Science group of CSC.
This is a four-year, time-limited position and normally includes 20% departmental duties, usually teaching. Research/doctoral students must be registered at KTH. The salary follows the guidelines provided by KTH. The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Computer Science with a specialisation in security, distributed systems, or equivalent. In addition to the traditional academic merits experiences with distributed systems, international experience and language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications.
Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.
