I am trying to give you (and hopefully other friends from Iran who keep sending me emails) a piece of advice: nobody cares about these random papers that you guys publish at the expense of your youth. An ideal PhD candidate is not the person who has wasted 4 years of his life after graduation publishing random papers in low ranking journals; the ideal candidate is a young and energetic student who graduates from a good school with a good GPA, has excellent Toefl and GRE scores, and continue his/her PhD immediately.
I am receiving many applications, but stay in touch with me. If your application make it to the short list I will contact you.
I am glad to hear of your interest to pursue your studies in ... and I encourage you to do so.
I think the most critical item is that you should strengthen your GRE by preparing and retaking that exam since the writing and verbal sections are likely to be concern to most admissions programs.
Additionally, most of the more selective programs will focus greatly on your letters of recommendation, your past research experience, and your statements for further evaluation.
I wish you continued success. Also, don't be discourage if you are not admitted to the top programs and simply explore other options and then contact the stronger programs later in your professional career for post-doctoral studies.
Sincerely and eradatmand,
