Dear Mohammad:
My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. My life is just plain complicated sometimes. However, I have done some investigation as to the status of your application and what happens next, and the probability at this time of being accepted for this fall.
My perspective first. I think you are well qualified to work in my group. In fact, few entering graduate students have as much relevant background experience and skills as you do.
But that is not an assessment of your potential to do well in graduate school. That assessment is the responsibility of the department Graduate Admissions Committee.
Graduate Admissions Committee's View. Your application has been reviewed. It looks basically good, except the Graduate Admissions Committee of the Chemistry department wants to have the results of the subject GRE. Why? Because it is required of all students seeking admission from outside the US. The basis for this requirement is that the committee feels that they cannot effectively evaluate the quality of your current university, or universities in most countries in the rest of the world. The subject GRE is therefore an independent measure of your preparation for graduate school in chemistry.
Timing Problem related to the Subject GRE. The exam is offered in April. Our department will not get the results until May/June. The committee has almost accepted as many students as they can for this fall. However, not all the students accepted by our department come (Usually they apply to multiple universities, have been accepted at several universities and choose to go elsewhere.) So, some will decline our offer, who knows how many. If enough decline, we will accept additional students, if they are still available.
Thoughts from the committee chair. He notes that there are typically 3 GRE scores: verbal, quantitative, and analytical. He noted that you only report 2 (verbal and quant) and maybe that's all that's offered in Iran? He does not know. He considers your verbal score very poor (10%-ile) and that you may - just may - want to consider taking the GRE's again in order to improve the verbal score without lowering the quantitative score you already achieved. The quantitative score isn't 'great' but 'acceptable'. Finally, he recommends AGAINST taking the TOEFL again because your score on it is OK. The TOEFL does balance to some extent the low verbal score.
In summary. He recommends that you take the subject GRE, get the results to the department and then a decision will be made. I hope that works for you.
I wish I could be more positive than that, but it is the current reality. I have reviewed my own current funding situation and I cannot support you at this time. However, that may change by July or so if I am lucky with my pending National Science Foundation grant and I can reassess. Getting grants funding is a bit like rolling dice—maybe I will get lucky, but there are no guarantees. I simply cannot say that if you come here, support will be available. I can say I and the department will know more in June/July.
Such decisions are not easy. I wish you the best
.
