The greater the challenge, The greater the gain
You ask good questions. They do not have simple answers, but I will
try to give you something to start with.
There is no exhaustive list of "right books" but here are some that I
like a lot and recommend.
1. "Introduction to Graph Theory" by Doug West.
This is a good book to start with. (I am biased because he was my PhD
adviser, but I think it is very good.)
2. "Graph Theory" by Reinhard Diestel
This book is more challenging, but also very good. You can download
the chapters at this web page:
http://diestel-graph-theory.com/basic.html?
3. "Matching Theory" by Laszlo Lovasz and Michael Plummer
This book is now 30 years old, but it does an excellent job with the
material that it covers.
4. "Combinatorial Problems and Exercises" by Laszlo Lovasz
Many of these problems are quite challenging, even for me now (10
years after finishing my Ph.D., and as a tenured professor),
so do not get discouraged if they take you a long time. The book
includes hints and full solutions, if you get really stuck, but do not
give up too quickly. I think they cover a lot of important material,
so I recommend working as many of them as you can, especially in
Chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
You must investigate subjects that excite and interest you. Try to
find subjects that are of wide interest to other mathematicians.
Think of publishing papers as a conversation between you and other
researchers. You must listen (read papers) to know what other people
are studying, and to find what interests you. In order to have others
interested in your work, you should work on problems that others are
interested in, too. But that does *not* mean that you must work on
the latest "hot topic". A big part of being a good researcher is
developing your sense of "taste" (what you think is interesting and
worth studying). This is something I still work on a lot. The best
way is to read lots of papers, listen to lots of talks, and try to
understand why other researchers think a problem is interesting or
important.
Do not feel bad if you listen to a talk and do not understand it all.
Almost no one does. Just try to understand as much as you can.
If you find it hard to attend talks, you may enjoy watching lectures
on the internet. There are many, but here are a few links that I
like:

http://www.math.ucla.edu/~pak/lectur...omb-videos.htm
There is lots of advice on how to have a good career in mathematics.
For now let me point you to the advice page of Terry Tao:
https://terrytao.wordpress.com/career-advice/
I have also attached a long excerpt from the book "Princeton Companion
to Mathematics" edited by Tim Gowers.
I like the book a lot, but it is just over 1000 pages and can be
overwhelming. My favorite section in the attached pdf is "Advice to a
Young Mathematician" (which starts on page 46 of the pdf), but you may
also enjoy the other articles.
My final advice is maybe the most important. You must always keep
trying to improve. Enjoy what you are now capable of, but always
stretch to be a better version of yourself. Keep having fun. And be
willing to help others who are not as far along as you.
