Don't Send Every Award You've Ever Received
A few years ago, one student sent a copy of their karate black belt certificate as part of the supplemental materials for their application. While this is a commendable achievement, one that implies a significant degree of discipline, it doesn't say very much about the student's ability to perform graduate studies. In fact, it's a negative, since it indicates the student doesn't have the critical analysis skills to determine what information can truly help their application. We threw the karate certificate in the trash. If you send supplemental information, make sure it is directly relevant to the pursuit of graduate study in Computer Science.

    Ali,

As you might imagine, the online application status check system is a complex program. Because we rarely waive the SAT requirement, we cannot modify the program to reflect this exception, so just ignore that item on the online status check and any computer-generated emails we send you to prompt for the SAT's. We will process your application as complete without the SAT's, even if the system continues to indicate they are missing.

Dear Ali, The reason you do not see those on the webpage is because the GREs are not required by Grinnell College for admission and so it did not list it there. But I just checked your file and we have received your scoers and they will be part of your application. Thank you for checking in with us! Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to let me know. Sincerely, Chinar Verma International Admission Intern Grinnell College Grinnell, IA 50112, USA E-mail: intladmission@grinnell.edu Phone: 641-269-3600 Fax: 641-269-4800

Dear Ali, Thank you very much for your email and your interest in applying to Jacobs University Bremen. This is to confirm that we will accept the GRE instead of the SAT. In addition to that we require: - Undergraduate Application Form - 2 Recommendations - certified copies of your transcripts of the last four years - an English Language Proficiency Test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Inga Schaal Senior Admissions Officer

    Dear Ali,

Since we do not require the GRE it is not one of the tests that we list on our status page, though we appreciate your sending it as a substitue given that the SAT is unavailable to you in Iran. We are working on tracking down your GRE since those results are often sent to our Graduate School rather than directly to our office. We are going to reach out to attempt to locate those scores and add them to your file, so there is nothing more that we need you to do for us at this time.

Thanks again for letting us know about this issue, and feel free to be in touch in a few weeks to check on the status of your GRE results.

    Sincerely,

    Kaitlin Howrigan

    Ali,

The GRE information will be useful and we will certainly consider the information in reviewing your application. It is helpful to have a consistent piece of information for all applicants so that we can be fair in our selection process.

    ------------------Dear Ali,

I apologize for taking so long to respond to your email - I have been traveling in China for some time now and I fell behind in my correspondence. I certainly understand the obstacle you face in taking the SAT exam since it is not offered in your country. Is there any chance you could travel to a neighboring country to take it? We can waive the SAT requirement, but you will be competing for admission with many international applicants who will have SAT scores which may make it more difficult for the Admissions Committee to choose to offer you admission over other strong candidates. If you are unable to take the SAT's, we will review your application without those scores. If that is the case, please do submit your GRE results so we have as much information as possible.

    Sincerely,

    Hello Ali,

Because you will not be able to take the SAT in your home country, the Office of Admissions is willing to waive that requirement. Please reply to me with your full name, high school name, and date of birth so this exemption can be processed in my office.

If English is not your first language I would recommend that you take the TOEFL. I realize that there have been barriers to that exam in the past as well but, from what I can find, it seems that it will be offered in the next few months.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Best,
    Meghan

In his email he should explain that he is a counselor at your school, that he is sending us a copy of your GRE scores, and that he attests that he has seen your original score report and the copy he is attaching for us is true and accurate to the original document.

    Hi,

You are not considered at any disadvantage because of your lack of SAT scores from IRAN. It's great that you did take the GRE and we would love you to include a copy of your scores w/your other materials for review.

You may write to interview@mit.edu to ask about a skype interview.

    Take care,
    MIT International Admissions

    Dear Ali,

We will accept a GRE from you instead of the SAT given your circumstances. There is no disadvantage to doing that for the application. We do look at applications holistically and that is one piece.

I wish you all the best,

    Hi Ali,

I'm very sorry for the delay in responding to your note - but, we have noted that TOEFL is once again available. Please note below that SAT is waived for students in Iran.

Thank you for your email. We appreciate your interest in MIT. International students are an important and vital part of the MIT community, and MIT Admissions works hard each year to ensure a diverse class of students from around the world.

The 2011 MIT Undergraduate Application is available online (http://www.mitadmissions.org/). International admission to MIT is very competitive. Out of more than 3,500 international applicants, we admit about 130. Almost all international students admitted to MIT have earned some form of regional, national or international distinction in areas as diverse as leadership, music, art, scientific research, academic competition, or athletics.

We can't give you an opinion as to what your chances are, but we can give you a sense of what we look for in our applicants. Basically, we're looking for students with strong interests -- both academic and non-academic -- who have taken a rigorous academic curriculum and done well. We want to see that students are involved in things because they care about them, not just because they think certain activities would "look good" on their resume or college application. We look for students who are willing to take risks, and we choose those who we feel will bring something special and unique to the MIT community.

MIT does not have specific required classes for admission but we consider an ideal preparation to include math through calculus, physics, chemistry, biology, and four years of English.

Your application will be read by a committee of experienced MIT admissions officers. We are familiar with many international school systems, including, but not limited to, the IB, A Levels, the French Baccalaureate, and CBSE, and we assure you that we will understand your curriculum and your context. Your application will be reviewed within the context of the resources available to you, including your situation as affected by family, school, culture, region, and country.

MIT requires the following test results for all applicants, regardless of completion of International Baccalaureate, A Levels, the French Baccalaureate, CBSE, IELT, or other exams. While your scores are only one component of your application, they are required.

We are aware that SAT testing is not available in Iran and waive the requirement for applicants living or studying in Iran. We're also aware of the restrictions on applying for TOEFL at this time.

Below are the standard requirements for students outside of China:

    - SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT with the writing test. In addition, we require two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). We do not have cutoff scores, however, we do consider 650 or above on the SAT's to be a competitive score.

    - If English is not your native language, or you have been using English for less than five years, or you do not speak English at home, you have two options:
    1) take the tests required for native English speakers (see above), or
    2) you may take the TOEFL (computer, paper, or internet) and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).

The minimum TOEFL scores required are:
    Paper - 577
    Computer - 233
    Internet - 90

If you have been using English for less than five years or do not speak English at home, we strongly suggest you take the TOEFL, however, MIT leaves this choice up to the applicant. Because MIT offers no English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and English is the language of MIT, all students must show that they will thrive in our community.

Your scores must be reported to us officially from the testing agency; scores you list on your application and scores appearing on your school transcript will not be considered official. Our SAT and TOEFL code is 3514 and our ACT code is 1858.

It is important for all students - and very important for international students - to register for tests with the same name as you have indicated on your application and MyMIT account. Your record and test scores will not be linked in our system if the names do not match.

You may find more information and register for the SAT tests online at http://www.collegeboard.com, for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) at http://www.ets.org, and for the ACT at http://www.actstudent.org.

At MIT, we have three guiding principles for undergraduate admissions and financial aid for all students (including internationa):
We seek out and admit the most talented and promising students without regard to their family financial circumstances.
We award undergraduate aid on the basis of financial need only. This means that we don’t offer any merit or athletic scholarships.
We meet the full need of each undergraduate for all four years.

International applicants must complete the MIT International Student Financial Aid Application. This application will be available after November 1, 2010. MIT reviews eligibility for assistance each year, however students should expect to receive the same financial aid package provided there are no significant changes in family finances and that you meet the renewal deadlines.

If you have further questions about financial aid at MIT, please contact the Office of Student Financial Services at finaid@mit.edu. You can also learn more by visiting their website at http://web.mit.edu/finaid.

We hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your college career.

    Sincerely,
    MIT International Admissions

ETS Resumes TOEFL and GRE Registrations in Iran
Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced it is resuming registrations in Iran for its TOEFL® and GRE® tests. The brief suspension was the indirect result of tighter U.N. Security Council restrictions on financial transactions involving Iran, which resulted in ETS's banking arrangements being discontinued. Students wishing to take the tests may register through Iran's National Organization of Educational Testing, or with credit/debit cards issued by banks that are not prohibited under U.N. or U.S. sanctions. ETS has permission from the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury to conduct its testing business in Iran.

    Dear Ali,

Congratulations on your admission to Brown!

I have just mailed a letter to you; however, mail service between the U.S. and Iran can be spotty (to say the least), so I also wanted to send you this email. We are so incredibly excited about you, your intellect and your many accomplishments. Needless to say, we hope (and would be honored if you do!) that you will chose to join Brown University's Class of 2016.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can answer any questions for you or your family, or if I can offer you any other assistance as you go about making your decision.

    Best wishes,
    Rebecca
