Advice for Prospective Students
If you have made it this far through my website, then you are probably looking for a research group for your PhD/MS studies. This is likely to be a challenging task for new graduate students, as there are many factors involved. Funding is always an issue, for both the student and the faculty member. Keep in mind that there are always significantly more students looking for positions than there are funding opportunities for them, so you need to make an effort when approaching a faculty member. Also consider alternate funding sources. Most graduate programs offer Teaching Assistant (TA) positions, and fellowships from government or industrial sources are another possibility.
Before contacting faculty members, keep this in mind...
- Do not ask about your qualifications to join the school! There are always websites or admissions staff that can help you with this. In general, you should look into this beforecontacting a faculty member about a research position.
- Do not send form letters or mass mailings! We get too much email every day. If it appears to be a generic email, we will likely ignore it.
- Read their websites! Most faculty post descriptions of their projects or research interests. If you ask them questions that are answered on their website, you will only demonstrate that you cannot find your own solutions when available.
- Review some of their publications. A good indicator of what they may do in the future is what they have already done.
- Be specific about your interests. Just stating that you are interested in their research area is not enough. What draws you to this particular project or person?
We are always looking for good students to work on exciting research projects, but keep in mind that funding is very limited. As much as we would like to fund every qualified student, we just cannot. As a general rule, I will not discuss funding a student until he/she has already committed to our program and started their graduate program. This usually gives me, or other faculty, a semester or two to review the student's capabilities before committing any of our limited funds.
