Umeå University is seeking outstanding candidates for 1-2 PhD student positions in computer science with a focus on knowledge-based systems applied to health care at the Department of Computing Science. The research group to which the positions will be associated conducts research at the intersection of AI and HCI with emphasis on interaction design of knowledge-based systems. Topics like multi-initiative systems, intelligent user interfaces, knowledge and user modeling, personalization, argumentation, multi-agent systems and semantic web techniques are central.

The current positions are aimed to strengthen and broaden the research that is currently focusing on the design and evaluation of methods, algorithms and software for decision-support in complex knowledge domains that promote development of users' knowledge and skills in collaborative use environments. Research topics include interaction design for knowledge assessment, formalisation and visualisation of complex reasoning processes in the health domain and methods for personalising support for reasoning. Automatic methods for adaptation are also in focus. Evaluation using formative and situated methods is central. The positions will be partly funded by AFA försäkring and includes collaboration with our national and international academic, industrial and healthcare providing partners.

The positions are aimed for PhD studies and research leading to a PhD exam. The positions include a competitive salary for a period of four years research time, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The positions may also include part-time teaching (normally up to 20%). If so, the total time for the positions is extended accordingly (up to maximum five years).
