Belgium

    ---------------------------
    Tips for living in Belgium: American expat Sarah shares her experiences

    http://www.expatinterviews.com/belgi...h-steegar.html

    What is the cost of living in Belgium?
    Even though the Euro is so strong right now, the cost of living in Brussels is very affordable. As mentioned, we spend 680 on rent. An average, good restaurant will run you an average of 30 euros per person, for starter, main course and a drink or two. We probably spend 500 euros a month on food for two of us. Public transport is good and there is no need for a car. Bus/metro rides can be had for 1.10 euros if you buy in advance. The train system is the most extensive in Europe and is very affordable. It is difficult to find a one way ticket inside the country for more than 15-20 euros.

    Last I heard, Brussels was considered the “most affordable Western European capital.”

    Cost of living in Belgium

    hi there
    i can give you some more info about living in ghent belgium
    there is a big difference between Brussels and Ghent of course

    so i can start with housing this is about 400 euro monthly for a nice house or a rather big apartment. Can be cheaper and of course more than that but the normal price is that and this does not include electricity, water and gas.

    gas and electricity may vary depends on use but 100 per month
    water 30euro on the 3 months.
    Fooding this is not expensive like 60 - 100 a month
    if you cook at home not in a restaurant
    eating out can be as 5 euro if you get the chips with mayo
    or 30 if you go to a restaurant- nice meal .
    tobacco way too much 5/40 per pack
    internet around 40 euro
    tel, mobile - can be 10 euro can be 25 if on contract depends on the provider.
    clothing great deals on sales cheap really
    if no sales pretty normal
    school if language- 20 euro can be 400 if in the uni language centre.
    but compared to uk uni higher education is really cheap
    i study architecture and this is 500 euro a year .

    well for one 1000 euro per month is good to have nice life style not too much but far from surviving. and this you can get with around 25 hours of work in a restaurant or a store.
    if you have a better job you would earn more.

    > accommodation prices = 600-700E per month for 50m2 in city centre.

    > public transportation fares = bus /tube / tram / sometimes train within Brussels, you use the same ticket. 1E70 for one trip ticket and 11E5 for 10 times.

    > food prices(per month, how much does it cost you?) 100E if you cook, the food is not very expensive

    > health prices (for those who need medical insurance): don't know

    > eduction prices (if you need to pay) ): don't know

    > energy prices (oil, electricity): don't know, mine is included in the rent

    > common bills (Internet, television, telephone, mobile phone) , internet =30E, TV about 200E per year, fix line it depends, will cost 6E5 for the line. Mobile 20E per month.

    > prices of a good menu in a traditional restaurant. Belgium people told me there is not Belgium cook. A menu normaly 20-25E

    Yes I agree Brussels is more expensive with short term rentals getting very expensive - above 1k Euro per month.

    I alos find food expensice when compared to neughbouring countries Holland for example.

    Public transport in Brussels although really filthy in places in cheap when compared to London.

    Enrgy prices are steep - Belgium has one of the highest untility csts in teh world.

    Hello,

    Ghent isn't thàt expensive, compared to other University cities such as Brussels or Antwerp.
    For €170 a month you should be able to find a small room in a student dorm with shared kitchen and bathrooms. If you are looking for an appartment or something alike, it'd start from about €350.
    If you try 'kot gent' on google, you can find some great links to help you further.

    Kind regards,
    A Ghent History student

Belgium

    What's the cost of living in Belgium?

    Agostino Moretti
    Hello!
    Can anyone of you help me with this question?
    How many income would be good to get on with?

    Best regards!

    ----------------------------

    Hi Agostino,
    I hope these articles might give you a first impression:

    Cost of living
    Living standards are quite high in Belgium. The student thus has to make sure that he/she has the financial means for a stay in Belgium, before he or she leaves. Universities in Belgium, cannot accommodate students who cannot afford to finance their studies, be it by their own means, study grants, governmental help, etc.

    Budget
    For a single student, an annual budget of about 8000 euro is necessary. For a family, an extra budget of 3000 euro per dependent has to be provided for.

    Travel expenses and expenses linked to lodging constitute the largest sum of money. Apart from that, expenses depend on your life-style and on the fact whether you are entitled to services offered by the University.

    Annual expenses

    * books and study materials: 500 euro
    * housing: 2,380 euro
    * food: 2,250 euro
    * health insurance and medical fees: 370 euro
    * entertainment: 520 euro
    * clothes: 370 euro
    * other: 370 euro

    Professional activity and student job
    It has to be pointed out that a professional activity in Belgium or a student job in view of a complement to one's resources, is difficult to find and heavily regulated (a work card is compulsory for students who are not from the European Union). Also, current legislation does not allow students to finance their studies only with "student jobs".

    ---

    Cost of living in Brussels

    Appartment 400-650 without heating, mines are about 450 Euro excl.heating & electricity.
    Electricity is about 25-35 Euro per month (on meter).
    Heating 75 Euro per month provision and 200 Euro yearly cost.
    Water is about 49 Euro for 3 months (it depends what you use all on meter).
    Food, since the Euro came in it's 3 x the price, a bread is now 1,85 Euro.
    Taxes a 1/3 of the monthly salary.
    Clothing can be expensive or cheap it depends what you want.

    Regards
    Camille
