PhD in Physics: Soft Condensed Matter and Photonics.
“Phase transitions of colloidal systems confined to nano-scale architectures”
The Soft Matter and Photonics group (SMP) at the University of Fribourg is offering a Ph.D.
position to a highly motivated and dynamic student who wish to deepens her/his knowledge in
the field of experimental soft condensed matter physics and obtain a doctoral degree in
physics. The Ph.D. will start the first semester of 2012 for a period of three years, which may
    be extended by one year.
The aim of the PhD project is to obtain an understanding of the effect of confinement on the
phase behavior of liquids. In particular, we will investigate critical phenomena and ordering
of confined colloidal systems consisting of micrometer size particles. The structure and
dynamics of colloidal systems will be studied by direct observation using modern microscopy
techniques, and we will use two-photon lithography to engineer complex three dimensional
    confinement-geometries.
Our group is working on a broad range of topics in soft matter physics and photonics, and the
successful candidate will take part in our ongoing national and international collaborations.
The candidate will also gain expertise in experimental techniques such as laser scanning
confocal microscopy, static and dynamic light scattering, diffusing wave spectroscopy and
    rheology.
    Eligibility
The candidate should have a background of excellence in experimental and/or theoretical
physics and an internationally-recognized master degree. A previous research experience as
well as computer programing skills are highly recommended but not required. No restrictions
of citizenship apply to the fellowships.
    Application procedure
The formal application should be submitted by e-mail to: smpjobs2012@gmail.com . E-mail
submissions must include the mailing label “SMP job” and your last name printed before the
    label.
Suitable candidates are requested to submit:
A Curriculum Vitae, including a full address, a contact phone number and e-mail
address and a copy of the passport,
A scanned copy of your University academic transcripts in English,
A scanned copy of the degree, if available at the time of application,
    A recommendation letter.

A PhD student position immediately available at
    City University of New York

This Ph.D. student position is funded by combination of my research grants with supports from Queens College and City University of New York with an excellent five-years package ($35,000/year) for the Doctoral Program in the Earth and Environmental Sciences at City University of New York. This Ph.D. study will start in late August 2012.
Responsibilities: We seek a talented PhD student who will apply a nonlinear dynamic approach to the study of canopy flow instability over complex terrain. Turbulent transport processes occurring within canopies are extremely complex, especially for ecosystems with hilly or mountainous terrain, and have not been accurately represented in models. Better understanding of these transport processes in complex terrain is important for understanding the role of terrain in the introduction of pollutants into the atmosphere, and the transfer of water and carbon dioxide between soil, vegetation, and the atmosphere. The overall goal is to develop analytical approaches for understanding instability conditions between different regimes of canopy flows over complex terrain. To address this goal, specific tasks are to: (1) derive analytical criteria for transition conditions between different regimes of terrain-induced canopy flows; and (2) verify the analytical results using computational fluid dynamics.
Qualifications: (1) Applicants have completed or are completing masters degree in theoretical physics, fluid mechanics, numerical simulation, engineering, meteorology, or geosciences; (2) Adequate English language skills, particularly in scientific writing is required (GRE>1200, TOEFL>90 for international students); and (3) The career goal of applicants is academic.
Please email applications that include: (1) A cover letter; (2) Curriculum vitae; (3) Copies of transcripts and TOEFL/GRE scores; and (4) one or two published papers if applicable to: Professor Chuixiang Yi(cyi@qc.cuny.edu) with a subject line "APPLICATION FOR A PhD POSITION". Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Call for a PhD in Computational Geodynamics

    Project Summary

The Computational Geoscience Department is seeking a clever and motivated PhD candidate to work on a collaborative project with the University of California, San Diego. The project will concentrate on solving fundamental problems of continental rifting in the presence o a mantle plume using the Afar as a case study. The project will involve strong collaboration with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and join an active group of researchers in the Computational Geoscience Department in geology, geophysics, plate tectonics, geodynamics and high performance computing.

    Project Description

Modelling continental rifting is a challenging research topic because continental lithosphere is extremely heterogenous in composition. The material properties of the lithosphere are dependent on this composition as well as pre-existing weaknesses in the material. Complicating the matter further, the rifted part of the continental is usually underneath signicant amounts of water and sediment, perhaps several kilometers. In only two places in the world can these rift flanks be seen on the surface of the planet: Iceland and the East African rift. In the case of Iceland however, the rift occurs through uplifted oceanic crust, while in the African rift system the rift occurs through the African continent. In earlier times, such as the breakup of Pangea, these rifts would have appeared all through the supercontinent seperating it into the continents we know today. Thus, studying the rift allows us to see back in time and look at the early formation of basins along the rift, analogues to the rich oil-bearing basins around the Atlantic for example. The aim is to model rift formation, particularly in the early period, replicating features observed in basins along the East African Rift.

    Project Aims

The project aims at solving some of the fundamental questions regarding the formation of rifting using the Afar as a laboratory:
    1. Is rifting in the Afar plume-driven or caused by far-field effects such as boundary forces?
    2. Why did rifting initiate in the Red-Sea-Afar-Gulf of Aden triple junction?
    3. What is the picture of the mantle flow around East Africa? Why is the volcanism concentrated on the Arabian plate?
    4. Is the East Africa rift a failed arm of the triple junction? If so, why?
    5. What is the role of pre-exiting lithospheric heterogeneities in influencing the development of the rift?

    What's Expected
The successful candidate engage in high quality research as directed by the project manager and supervisors as well as interact and communicate with other scientist in the department, at UCSD and at international conferences. The candidate must be able to travel and spend time at UCSD for significant periods of time during the 3 year project.
