PhD in Physics: Soft Condensed Matter and Photonics.
“Phase transitions of colloidal systems confined to nano-scale architectures”
The Soft Matter and Photonics group (SMP) at the University of Fribourg is offering a Ph.D.
position to a highly motivated and dynamic student who wish to deepens her/his knowledge in
the field of experimental soft condensed matter physics and obtain a doctoral degree in
physics. The Ph.D. will start the first semester of 2012 for a period of three years, which may
be extended by one year.
The aim of the PhD project is to obtain an understanding of the effect of confinement on the
phase behavior of liquids. In particular, we will investigate critical phenomena and ordering
of confined colloidal systems consisting of micrometer size particles. The structure and
dynamics of colloidal systems will be studied by direct observation using modern microscopy
techniques, and we will use two-photon lithography to engineer complex three dimensional
confinement-geometries.
Our group is working on a broad range of topics in soft matter physics and photonics, and the
successful candidate will take part in our ongoing national and international collaborations.
The candidate will also gain expertise in experimental techniques such as laser scanning
confocal microscopy, static and dynamic light scattering, diffusing wave spectroscopy and
rheology.
Eligibility
The candidate should have a background of excellence in experimental and/or theoretical
physics and an internationally-recognized master degree. A previous research experience as
well as computer programing skills are highly recommended but not required. No restrictions
of citizenship apply to the fellowships.
Application procedure
The formal application should be submitted by e-mail to:
smpjobs2012@gmail.com . E-mail
submissions must include the mailing label “SMP job” and your last name printed before the
label.
Suitable candidates are requested to submit:
A Curriculum Vitae, including a full address, a contact phone number and e-mail
address and a copy of the passport,
A scanned copy of your University academic transcripts in English,
A scanned copy of the degree, if available at the time of application,
A recommendation letter.
