PhD scholarship in Light-Driven Functionalized Microstructures for Lab-on-a-Chip Biophotonics
    Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
    Deadline: 8 November 2015

    Project description
The European Commission has identified Photonics, nanotechnology and biotechnology among the Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) that will drive future applications and innovations. This project combines these three KETS into a Lab-on-a-chip Biophotonics platform for a wide range of biotechnology applications, such as single-cell analysis of in vitro models for drug screening and cell development. Lab-on-a-chip systems promise dynamic control over the cell’s chemical microenvironment to reveal important single-cell effects that are otherwise lost in bulk studies. This project will use light-driven functionalized microstructures to overcome the resolution limits of fluidic delivery and create highly localized mechanical, optical and biochemical stimuli in Lab-on-a-chip systems. As key feature in the project, the optical manipulation and light analysis will be equipped with international state-of-the-art spatio-temporal light shaping of the newest generation of supercontinuum light source technologies to be uniquely developed in a strong interplay between the two supervising groups at DTU Fotonik

    Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Candidates with experience in photonics engineering, optical trapping, advanced light sources, wavefront engineering, nonlinear optics, and related fields of optical instrumentation and system integration are encouraged to apply. Moreover the candidate shall have additional skills as: Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, Industrial experience is highly appreciated.

    Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow
    Australian National University, Australia
    Deadline: Thu, 10 Dec 2015

We have up to seven (7) Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Fellow positions available with an initial fixed term contract period of three (3) years. An extension on this period may be possible for a further twelve (12) months contingent on funding availability. Commencement dates are flexible between March - December 2016.

The Postdoctoral Fellows / Research Fellows will work closely with Professor Lisa Kewley, Professor Mark Krumholz, and/or Professor Naomi McClure-Griffiths on one or more of the following projects:

Chemical Evolution across Cosmic Time: this research program, suitable for both theorists and observers, combines rest-frame UV, optical, and infrared Keck spectroscopy with large-scale numerical simulations to understand chemical evolution in galaxies across cosmic time, gas transport through galaxies and in galactic outflows, and how chemical elements are incorporated into stars.
Galaxy Formation and Evolution in 3D: this research program includes the SAMI integral field spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies and gravitationally lensed galaxies at high redshift with stellar evolution synthesis, photoionization and shock models to understand galaxy formation and evolution, including star formation and the accumulation and transport of metals and gas within galaxies.
The AGN - Host Galaxy Connection: this program combines wide integral field spectroscopy with detailed theoretical photoionization simulations to understand the fueling of supermassive black holes, the impact on the surrounding star formation, and the impact on their host galaxies.
The Origin of the Initial Mass Function: this project involves radiation magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of the collapse and fragmentation of molecular clouds, following the process down to the scale of individual stars. Applicants will have the opportunity to both develop new computational techniques and conduct science applications.
The Role of Gas Evolution in Galaxy Evolution: this project involves observational (ATCA, VLA, ASKAP & ALMA) and/or theoretical work towards understanding how the rate of atomic-to-molecular gas conversion varies and its role in star formation efficiency.
Gaseous Outflow from the Centre of the Milky Way: this is an observational project using the gas embedded in the Milky Way's Galactic Wind to study the origin and nature of the Fermi Bubbles.
The University actively encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For more information on employment opportunities, contact our Indigenous Employment Consultant on indigenous.employment@anu.edu.au

Postdoc Position in Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance
    Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
    Deadline: 31 December 2015

A two-year postdoc position is available at the Center for Hyperpolarization in Magnetic Resonance, a new CoE under the Danish National Research Foundation at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

The project is funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research as part of the project “HyperPET/MR: a new concept of hybrid molecular imaging in cancer using simultaneous PET and 13C-hyperpolarized MRSI”.

Hyperpolarization allows in vivo detection of 13C-labelled molecules in real time. The hyperpolarization is based on the SPINlab technology available at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and at the DTU.

The hyperpolarization technology for human and large animal studies requires a range of quality control parameters to be measured within seconds before the release of the product and delivery to the patient/animal. The sterility of the product is ensured by the fluid path containing the 13C molecule and the dissolution medium. In this project the focus is on optimizing the fluid path for clinical studies, but also for small animal studies. The hyperpolarization of a range of biological molecules will be studied and optimized for in vivo studies.

    Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a PhD in Magnetic Resonance and preferably a strong instrumentation experience. Experience with hyperpolarization in general, or dynamic nuclear polarization in particular, is advantageous. The candidate can have a background in chemistry, physics, pharmacy or equivalent. Curiosity and drive is essential to advance the research in a small team.

    Further information
    Further information may be obtained from Jan Ardenkjaer-Larsen, tel: +45 40 27 27 75.
