    PhD Position in Optical Metamaterials

The Adolphe Merkle Institute (AMI) at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland invites applications for a PhD position in the Soft Matter Physics group of Prof. Ullrich Steiner, jointly supervised by Dr. Ilja Gunkel and Dr. Bodo Wilts.
The goal of the project is the optical characterisation of well-defined 3D morphologies that potentially exhibit a negative refractive index at visible optical wavelengths. Part of the project includes the fabrication of these novel materials. Computer simulations of the light-matter interaction will be performed hand-in-hand with experiments.
The successful applicant will hold a Master’s degree, or equivalent, in Physics, preferably with a focus on optics or photonics. The candidate should wish to pursue independent research involving electron microscopy, self-assembly of (bio-)polymers and optical characterisation techniques and should have excellent communication skills in English (both written and oral). Close collaboration with other members of AMI, the Faculty of Sciences, and local and international companies is expected.
The Adolphe Merkle Institute at the University of Fribourg is a recently established center of competence, focused on research in the field of soft nano-materials, science and technology. With the objective to stimulate innovation, AMI aims to combine fundamental and application-oriented research within an interdisciplinary setting. AMI offers highly competitive working conditions, an outstanding infrastructure and a competitive salary.
Please email your application to ami-applications@unifr.ch including your CV, a cover letter, and contact information of (at least) two references. Review of applications will begin immediately upon receipt of complete application materials. The call remains open until a fitting candidate has been selected.

    M.Sc. Thesis Opportunity 2016 - 2018
Performance of a UAV-borne Directional Gamma Spectrometer
    Department of Physics
    at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada

"An opportunity exists for a geophysics or physics student to perform their M.Sc. thesis work at the Geological Survey of Canada on studies of the performance of a directional gamma spectrometer on board an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Building on decades of successful exploration for uranium and other precious ore by aerial survey of natural radioactivity, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has responsibility for aerial radiometric survey for nuclear emergency response (NER). The NRCan NER team will be commissioning an advanced gamma-ray spectrometer to fly on their recently acquired UAV over the years 2016 to 2018. Equipped with novel directional and mapping technology, the UAV will advance the team's capability to respond, providing a platform which can enter areas too hazardous for manned vehicles."

    Projects:
The project is suitable for a geophysics or physics student.
    1) A geophysics student would register for an M.Sc. in the Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University.
The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Laurel Sinclair and Dr. Claire Samson. Emphasis will be on survey
and mapping with the UAV-borne system and characterization of the performance in flight with applications
    in prospecting for ore.
    2) A physics student would register for an M.Sc. in Medical Physics in the Department of Physics. The student
will be supervised by Dr. Laurel Sinclair. Emphasis will be on image reconstruction methods for data
collected during a grid flight pattern.
    Terms and Required Assets:
    • Student with an excellent academic standing accepted at Carleton University Earth Sciences or Physics
    Departments to begin Sept 2016.
    • The ideal candidate has an undergraduate degree in Earth Science, Engineering or Physics and is interested in
computational methods, quantitative data analysis and software development.
    • Research Assistantship funding adequate for a student paying domestic tuition fees will be offered.
    • Interested students should send an e-mail to laurel.sinclair@canada.ca.

Dean’s Graduate Research Assistantships Department of Physics
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
The Department of Physics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for Dean’s Graduate Research Assistantships beginning from Fall 2017. Since it opened in 2015, UTRGV has been attracting highly competitive faculty members and has been building new research infrastructure with the goal of becoming an emerging research institution. The Department of Physics at UTRGV has 25 full time faculty members conducting research in astrophysics, biophysics, computational physics, general relativity, optics, nanophotonics, condensed matter, and material science. Its Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy has long and successful history of participation in research conducted by the LIGO Collaboration.
In an effort to enhance the quality of its graduate programs the Dean of the College of Sciences created special Graduate Research Assistantships available to students in Fall 2017. These scholarships are intended to support graduate students specializing in one of the areas of research conducted at the Department. The financial support for the 1st year will be made in the form of pure Research Assistantships and Scholarships to cover tuition and fees. The second and following years will be supported by combination of Research and Teaching Assistantships with tuition and fees also covered.
Applications should be submitted online to UTRGV Graduate College under the program MS Physics and should include the Statement of Purpose, GRE (General Test) scores, undergraduate transcripts with cumulative GPA, and three letters of recommendation from persons not affiliated with UTRGV. Although the initial admission will be made to Physics MS program the admitted students will be eligible to continue their studies under PhD Program. The deadline for submitting applications is March 6, 2017. For instruction on how to submit the application please visit http://www.utrgv.edu/graduate/index.htm .
UTRGV is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer that strives to hire without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information or veteran status.
