    Postdoctoral Fellowship in Applied Mathematics

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2018. This is a two-year fellowship with the possibility of renewal for another year. These positions are part of a new project — in collaboration with the Fields Institute, University of Waterloo and Industry — entitled “Laboratory for Inference and Prediction.”
The project aims at developing methods to create new model-based and data-driven tools for discovering fundamental structures and detecting anomalies in multivariate time-series, using a mix of multidisciplinary approaches from theory, modeling, and simulation. Some of the methods include dynamical system modeling, change detection techniques, and Bayesian inference analyses.

Specifically, the successful candidates should also possess some of the following qualifications: (i) strong mathematical background (especially in dynamical system modeling and estimation); (ii) strong background in statistical approaches and statistical learning; (iii) fluency in some programming languages; and (iv) open-mindedness and eagerness to learn from other disciplines. We explicitly specify the last qualification to reflect the importance of integration across disciplines in the project.

Applicants must demonstrate strong interest in transdisciplinary research and a PhD degree in applied mathematics, engineering, statistics, or related/relevant fields. The University of Waterloo is strongly committed to employment equity within its community, and to recruiting a diverse faculty and staff. The University encourages applications from all qualified candidates, including women, members of visible minorities, Aboriginal persons, members of sexual minorities, and persons with disabilities.

Selection will be based on the candidate's research potential, availability of a supervisor, fit with a research area in the department and teaching ability. All interested recent PhDs are encouraged to apply. The salary range for this position is $45,000-$50,000. This position is contingent upon funding.

Application for this fellowship is through the website MathJobs.org. Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae and a one-page research statement to www.MathJobs.org. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted through www.MathJobs.org website.

The review process will start immediately. The positions will stay open until they are filled.

    Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Mathematics
    University of Warwick
    “Nonlinear dynamics for stellarator design”
2 years to start in September or October 2018 (subject to contract)

We seek a highly motivated and creative researcher with PhD in dynamical systems theory, preferably Hamiltonian dynamics, for a postdoctoral research project in stellarator design.

The project is to explore the possibilities to make toroidal magnetic confinement devices for plasma that have (nearly) integrable guiding-centre dynamics (to maximise the confinement) and no externally driven current (to minimise associated instabilities and the need for current drive); such devices are called stellarators. The latter condition requires significant deviation from axisymmetry, which would otherwise be the straightforward way of achieving the former and is the principle of the tokamak. Integrability is guaranteed, however, under a condition called quasisymmetry. A first question is to what extent quasisymmetry can be realised by magnetohydrodynamic equilibria without an external current drive.

The position is funded by the Simons Foundation under an international collaboration on “Hidden symmetries and fusion energy”. The Simons Foundation grant will also pay for the postdoc to collaborate with Prof Meiss in Boulder, Colorado, and participate in team collaboration meetings in the USA.

Interested applicants are invited to contact R.S.MacKay@warwick.ac.uk or James.Meiss@colorado.edu

Subject: Postdoc in Computational and Mathematical Neuroscience (closing 29 July; EPSRC funded)
    *closes soon*, on 29 July

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computational and Mathematical Neuroscience

Location: College of Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences at the University of Exeter (Streatham Campus)

    Job reference: P62935

    Application closing date: 29/07/2018
    Interview date: 10/08/2018

Salary From £34,520 on Grade F, dependent on knowledge, skills and experience

This new full-time post is available from 1st October 2018 on a fixed term contract basis for 2 years.

The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the project Neural oscillator network modelling of auditory stream segregation. This EPSRC funded post is available from 01/10/2018 for 2 years. The successful candidate will join the Systems Biomedicine and Dynamical Systems research groups housed in the recently launched GBP 50m Living Systems Institute at the University of Exeter. These groups house over 50 researchers applying mathematical and computation approaches to study problems in neuroscience, biology and healthcare. The project will benefit from input from colleagues with expertise in neural networks, bifurcation theory, coupled oscillators and numerical methods.

    The Post:
The project will involve developing mathematical and computational models to deepen our understanding of auditory stream segregation. This is a fundamental process in the auditory system that allows us to separate out and focus on distinct sound streams (e.g. voices) in a dynamic noisy environment. This process involves competition in order to resolve different interpretations of a given environment (e.g. different groupings of objects). Many aspects of this process are still not well understood, such as where in the brain segregation of streams is achieved, how the streams are encoded and the driving neural mechanisms. This project will develop a biologically motivated model inspired by a broad cross section of modelling and experimental literature (from anatomical, neurophysiological, brain imaging and behavioural experiments). The models developed will be based on networks of coupled neural oscillators. Neural oscillations are understood to be vital for the encoding of temporal information in auditory streaming. Dynamical systems theory including bifurcation analysis and numerical methods will provide the necessary tools to understand the dynamics of the models developed.

    About you:
    - Candidates with quantitative backgrounds (Mathematics, Physics, Engineering) and from Neuroscience programmes with a strong computational component are encouraged to apply.
    - Applicants will possess a PhD or equivalent in one of these areas or a related field. T
    - You will also be able to work collaboratively and supervise the work of others.
    - Programming experience in a high-level language (e.g. Matlab, Python, C/C++) is a must and knowledge of dynamical systems theory is a plus.
