You need to remember that no all types of H1 from university is good enough for getting green card. Except for "national interest waver", for all other types of green card application, you need to have a permanent job. University may give you a job (e.g. researcher working on a grant) that is not considered by them as permanent job.
The faster path to green card that Babak talked about is usually "outstanding researcher" which requires you to have a very good resume in addition to a permanent job from university. Of course, different universities have different policies; but usually they use this for they faculty, or research scientists.
