PhD Project in Complex Network Research
DTU Informatics would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting April 1st, 2012. The project is financed by the Villum Foundation.
Project Description
The aim of the project is to work on analysis and modeling of complex networks. This position focuses on the properties of social networks observed with very high temporal and spatial resolution. The theoretical work will be driven by computational analysis of empirical data. We are interested in understanding the following questions:
Dynamical processes. Can we use a high-resolution network to push the current state of the art within, e.g. diffusion, mobility, co-evolution, on dynamic, multiplex and spatially embedded networks?
Incomplete data and sampling. Using a high-quality, multi-channel network, can we begin to understand the effects of analyzing highly sampled data?
Information stored in relationships. How can we quantify this notion in a social network and study to what extent our behavioral patterns are encoded in our social ties?
Influence in social systems. Can we use an understanding of dynamical processes to better understand how and when some nodes influence others?
Privacy. How do we manage the question of privacy in a network with highly detailed information about each node?
Read more here. The successful candidate will work on one ore more of these tasks under the direction of and in collaboration with Dr. Sune Lehmann.
Requirements
Candidates must have a master degree in computational science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, physics, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document excellent analytical and/or computational skills. Academic publications are considered an additional bonus. Experience with computer programming is essential, as is excellent command of the English language.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the ITMAN Graduate School Programme of DTU Informatics. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules at DTU, which may be obtained here.
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for PhD degree students.
