I personally feel you have a good shot. You just applied to top ranked universities and expect a miracle.
Try middle ranked universities. Your background will be very well considered given that you have an engineering degree. Educational psychology has moved towards the integration of computerized methodologies. Your application would have an upper hand compared to others. Also, try cognitive psychology and neuroscience programs.
So, the best strategies is to search, search and search as many American, Canadian, Australian universities as possible.
You should find a right fit and it definitely comes with persistent communications and position hunting.
Back in days, I applied to 10 USA universities and one Canadian university. I only applied to those schools that I knew they strongly consider my application. How did I get to know about this? Only by searching, communication, looking up their average GRA scores, application deadlines and so forth and so on. I had a long list of Excel sheet organizing each program, their requirement, my strengths and chances. I painstakingly reviewed over 200 departments in the US and Canada. Think about it…
Also, a rule of thumb is that if the application deadline of a program is around Dec 1 or earlier, that program is really competitive. If any deadline is going to be around Feb 1
st or Jan, that is going to be a much less competitive program and you might have a good shot depending upon other factors. Plus, you should find a faculty who seriously considers your application. That is actually the number one factor to nail it. And, of course, throughout the years, I have completely come to this conclusion that chance indeed plays some role in this process, but not more than your own control over your admission. For example, the situation is completely messed for upcoming Iranian students due to Covid 19. I am not even sure they can get their visas on time before the semester begins.
