Successful candidates will conduct their PhD according to the phases, milestones, and study program of the Graduate School for Geoinformatics including a 30 credit point course program and an external semester. If applicable, a German language course of 2-6 months will be funded before the start of the doctoral program.
Number of awards offered:Two Scholarships are offered.
Duration of award:The scholarships are for up to three years (up to four years for candidates from developing and emerging countries).
What does it cover?Scholarships include
-Monthly scholarship of 1.000€
-Country-dependent lump sum for travel costs
-Insurance package (health, accidents, liability)
-Research allowance of 460€ per year
If applicable, support of accommodation costs and family needs
-If applicable, a German language course of 2-6 months before the start of the doctoral program.
Selection Criteria:The selection of the candidates will follow a performance-based procedure. The allocation of doctoral candidates to research fields and supervisors will be competitive in the Institute for Geoinformatics, i.e. the best applications fill the available spots. We target national as well as international holders of a Masters degree (or equivalent) related to GI. The field of Geographic Information is interdisciplinary, so previous Bachelor studies can be in GI or any GI application area, such as geography, ecology, transportation, agriculture, forestry, energy provision, computer science, geology, etc.

The University of Amsterdam offers the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarships (AES) to excellent students from outside the EU/EEA who opt for an international Master’s programme at the UvA. The AES is a full scholarship (€25,000) that covers tuition fee and living expenses. Students will be selected on the basis of academic excellence, ambition and relevance for a student’s future career.

Grant award period:
Students receive the scholarship for one year and are expected to maintain good academic standing during the year. Students who receive the AES for a two-year Master’s programme will be evaluated after one year of study. The scholarship will only be continued for the second year if the AES student has completed all courses of the first year on time with a grade point average of 8.0.

Extra facilities:
The university will help AES students to find accommodation, preferably together with other AES recipients.
It is expected that AES recipients will participate in activities with AES sponsors. They will be permitted to join special extracurricular activities and become part of a selective community, including the AES alumni network.
