    Vacancies

1 PhD Scholarship – ARC Linkage Grant: Exploring Social Innovations in Urban Water Systems
We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious student interested in sustainability transitions and social innovations to join the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences and the Centre for Water Sensitive Cities. This Australian Research Council funded project involves exploring scenarios for the future of Melbourne’s urban water system, especially scenarios of transitions to water sensitive futures. The systematic exploration of such scenarios entails modelling approaches and stakeholder participation, so an affinity with modelling and participatory processes would be beneficial.
The student would be working on mapping the historical and current social dynamics of Melbourne’s urban water system as a basis for developing exploratory modelling of transition scenarios. This will also involve close interaction with staff of Melbourne Water, the industry partner in this project. The student will have the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of social and engineering sciences, employing a highly innovative theoretical frame in a participatory modelling environment.

    Closing Date: July 1st, 2012.

Ph.D. scholarship: Flow at the sediment-water interface, School of Environmental Systems Engineering, University of Western Australia
The fluid mechanics of the sediment-water interface is not well understood, limiting the ability of water quality models to predict nutrient and contaminant concentrations in both freshwater and marine systems. This project will employ a detailed and innovative experimental program to characterise the flow field and the rate of vertical mixing at the sediment-water interface. This project is linked to an existing ARC Discovery grant; an outline of the proposal written for this grant is available here.
    Requirements/Eligibility
Applications are invited from both Australian and international students. Applicants should possess an honours degree (or equivalent) in environmental engineering or related fields (including environmental science, civil/mechanical/chemical/coastal engineering and physics).
Please send a cover letter describing your research interests and experience, a CV and the names of two referees toAssociate Professor Marco Ghisalberti.

    PhD position: Arsenic mobilisation in
    redox-dynamic coastal wetlands

    Background:
We are seeking to appoint a motivated and suitably qualified PhD candidate to conduct research exploring the geochemical behaviour and co-cycling of arsenic, iron and sulfur in coastal wetlands with dynamic hydrology and fluctuating redox conditions.
The PhD position is based at Southern Cross GeoScience, which is a research centre within Southern Cross University (SCU). Southern Cross GeoScience is host to a young and dynamic group of researchers focused on Environmental Geoscience disciplines (website: http://www.scu.edu.au/geoscience/index.php).
In a recent nation-wide assessment, SCU was one of only three Universities in Australia to attain the top ranking in the field of geochemistry, which is the primary discipline area of this scholarship. The University is located in sub-tropical northern NSW and the region offers a high quality of life.
Project title: Arsenic mobilisation in redox-dynamic coastal wetlands - effects of sea-level rise
This position will investigate arsenic behaviour in iron and sulfur-rich coastal wetlands under oscillatory redox conditions and dynamic flow regimes. Specifically, the student will explore interactions between geochemical and hydrological processes that act as key controls on the mobilisation, flux and attenuation of arsenic in iron-rich coastal lowlands at risk of inundation by rising sea-levels. The student will undertake both controlled laboratory-based studies and field-based investigations in Australian coastal wetland systems.
    Eligibility:

    • Honours degree or equivalent in Environmental Geochemistry or similar subject.
    • The applicant's qualifications should include experience with redox and sorption geochemistry, and experience studying environmental systems via field or laboratory experiments.
    • Very high degree of proficiency in both written and spoken English (strict criteria apply for non-native English speakers).
    • The applicant's academic background must be strong enough to qualify her/him for a scholarship, stipend and fee (tuition) waiver.
    • Applicants are advised to see information on the Southern Cross Universities webpage(s) to evaluate her/his prospects.

    Funding:
The successful candidate will be offered a full-time PhD position. Contingent on satisfactory performance, this will be extended to a total period of 3 years, with the specific intent that a PhD thesis is submitted within this period.
The project includes a 3-year scholarship ($28,000 pa) and an additional stipend to cover research costs of up to $5000 AUD pa will be available.
The position is fully funded and associated with an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship awarded to Associate Prof. Scott Johnston.
For informal inquiries about the position or to apply, email Associate Prof. Scott Johnston:scott.johnston@scu.edu.au
Applications must include a CV, academic grade transcripts, copies of previous research outputs and a cover letter outlining research interests and research experience/skills.
    Applications close: 30th November 2012.
    Expected start date: March 2013.

PhD Scholarship Opportunity - Aquatic biodiversity and biogeochemical processes in urban wetlands

    • PhD Scholarship top up of $10,000
    • CRC for Water Sensitive Cities and the Schools of Biological Science and Chemistry
    • Monash University, Melbourne, Australia

The traditional reason for constructing wetlands within urban regions is to improve water quality, primarily through the removal of nutrients. In the past, wetlands have been regarded as a 'black box', with hydraulic loading rate and residence time being the most important factors. In reality, nutrient processing is very strongly influenced by the flora and fauna present within a wetland. For example, it is well known that bio-irrigating in fauna such as larval chironomids will strongly influence both denitrification rates (an important nitrogen removal process) as well as nitrous oxide production (a potent greenhouse gas). Flora will also have a profound influence on nitrogen removal through assimilation, as well as enhancing nitrogen cycling processes.
    The Opportunity

This PhD project will identify and investigate the key relationships between biodiversity and nutrient processes within wetlands and the underlying sources of carbon "driving" aquatic foodwebs. A major aim is to determine how urban waterways can be designed to increase biodiversity values whilst also performing water treatment and other ecosystem service functions.
The project will be jointly supervised by Professor Jenny Davis (Biological Sciences) and Associate Professor Michael Grace and Dr Perran Cook (Water Studies Centre, Chemistry).
The top up scholarship is dependent upon the receipt of an Australian Postgraduate Award or an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship.
    Applications

Please complete the application form for an APA or an IPRS available on the School of Biological Sciences, Monash University website.
At the same time you should send an expression of interest for the top up scholarship to Professor Jenny Davis, Jenny.Davis@monash.edu
    Information and Enquiries

Information about the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities, the School of Biological Sciences and the Water Studies Centre, School of Chemistry, respectively, can be found at the following web links:

Specific information about this scholarship is available from:
    Professor Jenny Davis, Jenny.Davis@monash.edu
Associate Professor Mike Grace, Michael.Grace@monash.edu and
