National University of Ireland offers Hardiman Research Scholarships for EU/ Non- EU Students to Pursue Structured PhD Programmes in Ireland 2013-2014


Study Subject(s): Study subjects are Biomedical Science and Engineering, Informatics, Physical, and Computational Sciences, Environment, Marine, and Energy, Applied Social Sciences and Public Policy and Humanities in Context.
Course Level: This scholarship is available for pursuing PhD degree level.

Eligibility:
-Successful applicants will be expected to have a first or upper second class honours primary degree or equivalent. For students with undergraduate results expressed in GPA (“Grade Point Average”) or QCA form, in the Irish university system a first corresponds to a 3.6 or above and an upper second corresponds to a 3.2 or above (but less than a 3.6).
-The Hardiman Scholarship programme does not accept applications from persons currently registered as PhD candidates.


Scholarship Open for International Students: EU and non- EU students can apply for this scholarship.


Scholarship Description: NUI Galway is now offering Hardiman Research Scholarships for Structured PhD programmes. The Hardiman Research Scholarships offer opportunities for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a postgraduate degree by research focused on the five key areas of research in which the University offers leading expertise. Additional Cancer Care West Hardiman Scholarships have been established with the generous support of Cancer Care West and Galway University Foundation. The scholarships will support translational and clinical research in the area of Cancer Biology, Therapeutics, and Psycho-oncology at NUI Galway and the associated University Hospital Galway (UHG).


Duration of award(s): These scholarships are fully-funded for 4 years.


What does it cover? The value of the Research Scholarship is a stipend of €16,000 p.a. plus fees.


Selection Criteria: The applications will be assessed under four main headings which reflect the main sections of the application process. Assessors will consider all four elements of the application and allocate scores as follows:
-Personal Research Statement (max. 50 points)
-Academic Qualifications (max. 30 points)
-Referees’ report (max. 10 points)
-Prior Research Experience (max. 10 points)

Post-doc and Funded PhD in Air-Sea Exchange Post-doc: Characterising a New Gas Analyser for Eddy Covariance Measurements of Air-Sea Fluxes of Carbon Dioxide Accurate measurements of atmosphere-ocean fluxes are important for quantifying the amount of greenhouse gases that are transferred across the air-sea interface. The eddy correlation (direct) method is considered to be the benchmark for accurate determination of air-sea fluxes. This method relies on high-frequency measurements of the fluctuations of vertical wind velocity (w') and gas concentration (c'). Current gas analyser technology places constraints on the ability to determine c' with the required signal-to-noise ratio, and measurements are limited to conditions of high air-sea fluxes. The main objective of this project is to characterise a newly-developed photoacoustic gas analyser and implement it within an eddy-covariance system. This technology will provide a significant improvement in sensitivity over the IR absorption sensors that are currently in oceanographic use, and there is a very stong potential for reducing the scatter in the air-sea gas transfer coefficient. Post-doctoral candidates should have completed a PhD in oceanography, atmospheric science, or a related field with a proven research record and evidence of high research potential. Familiarity with the eddy covariance flux method is exceedingly desirable. Experience with instrumentation is essential. Enthusiam for participation in ocean-going field experiments is necessary. Funded PhD Fellowship: Turbulence Measurements at the Ocean Surface for the SPURS Ocean Salinity Experiment This project addresses the following question: What is the vertical distribution of small-scale temperature, salinity, dissipation, and velocity in the upper 100 m of the ocean, and how do these processes contribute to the North Atlantic Salinity Maximum? The primary focus of this project is to study the small-scale processes at the ocean surface to quantify their impact on sea surface salinity using data from the Air-Sea Interaction Profiler (ASIP). ASIP is upwardly-rising profiler that has a suite of high-resolution sensors that can provide measurements from mixed-layer depths to the air-sea interface, including temperature, salinity, shear, velocity, and PAR. The shear measurements provide the level of turbulence, which is quantified by the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. This dissipation and temperature/salinity profiles are essential to determining the vertical turbulent fluxes of salt and temperature in a stratified system, which is the main mechanism of transport of these scalars. Because of the high spatial resolution of the salinity profiles, the sea surface salinity can be determined exactly and related to the bulk salinity and the turbulent fluxes. Applicants should have a degree in physics, engineering, or a closely-related discipline, and a strong motivation for research. Familiarity with ocean turbulence is desirable but not essential. من از NUI Galway جواب اوکی استاد دارم، دو ماهی هست نامه نگاری داریمو اسکایپم کردیم و خوشش اومده و گفته استایپندش 1200 تاس از فوریه هم شروع میشه. من هیچ نظری راجع به ایرلند و گالوی ندارم، ضمن اینکه خیلی دوست دارم امریکا و کانادا و استرالیا (مهاجر پذیرترها) رو هم یه امتحانی بکنم. کسی میتونه بگه اونجا واسه کار بعد فارغ التحصیلی چجوریه؟ اصلن ایرانی هست اونجا (مشخصن تو این دانشگاه و شهر گالوی)؟

شما بعد از اتمام تحصيل با توجه به نزديك بودن به بريتانيا( با احتمال اينكه هيچ كاري در خود ايرلند جنوبي پيدا نكنيد كه خيلي بعيده.....چون دانشگاه ها با صنايع ارتباطات مستقيم دارند) ، شانس پيدا كردن كار در بريتانيا و نهايتا مهاجرت به اين كشور را خواهي داشت. لهجه آيريش هم تازه ياد ميگيري!!!
اما به نظرم گويا شما بيشتر روي آمريكا و كانادا نظر داري....كه اينجوري خودت اذيت ميشي چون اين دو كشور قابل قياس با كشورهاي ديگه نيستند.
من پيشنهاد مي كنم اين فرصت رو از دست نده.

آقا بهت پيشنهاد ميكنم يه سرچ ساده در مورد فرصت هاي شغلي متالورژيكي در بريتانيا بكن....من توي يكي دوتا كاريابي اونجا عضوم باورت ميشه هر 5 روز 10 تا فرصت كاري در حوزه مواد برام ميل ميكنه...اما وقتي ساكن بريتانيا نباشي تقريبا هيچ شانسي نداري.
بابا من الان جاي تو بودم، بليط هواپيما رو خريده بودم!!!!
