Simon Fraser University:
For admission to the MA program, students must be able to demonstrate an adequate background in linguistics. Students having little or no academic preparation in linguistics will not be admitted to the program
UBC: I am interested in doing an M.A. or Ph.D. in linguistics, but so far I've only taken one or two introductory undergraduate courses in linguistics. Can I apply to the program
You can, but your chance of being admitted would probably be small. You may want to consider taking our Diploma Program in Linguistics first. Please note though that completion of the Diploma Program is by no means a guarantee for admission to our graduate program. Diploma students are not eligible for financial assistance from the department
Alberta: Candidatesfor the MSc must have completed, to the satisfaction of the Department, certain core courses in linguistics ortheir equivalents. Candidates who lack this preparation may be expected to undertake a year of qualifyingstudies before being admitted to the degree program
UCSB: I do not have a degree in linguistics. Am I still eligible to apply
Generally speaking, students who do not have a B.A. or M.A. in linguistics are at a disadvantage in the admissions process. If admitted, such students typically need to make up a good deal of coursework. In order to be competitive with other applicants, it is advisable to take as many courses as possible in core areas of linguistics as well as your area of specialization, and to specify any current and planned linguistics coursework in your application
CU Boulder: In order to be considered for admission to the PhD program you must have taken four of the following courses: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and diachronic linguistics. Courses that study mostly one language are not adequate
(Rice University: We accept students who have a B.A. (or equivalent), as well as students with advanced degrees in Linguistics (M.A. or equivalent
