ACCOMMODATION
more information is found on
www.uni-mainz.de/studium/134_ENG_HTML.php
Your admission letter does not entitle you to a place in a residence hall. You must take responsibility for your own accommodation. Unfortunately, the International Office cannot help you with this. You can rent from private landlords or try to obtain a room in a private residence hall. Also, there are a number of state-operated residence halls. Applications for residence halls are available from the Accommodation Office of the Mainzer Studentenwerk: Mainzer Studentenwerk, Staudinger Weg 21, D-55128 Mainz
Applications are considered and processed in the order received. If you have been allocated a room in a residence hall you will receive an acceptance letter in July/August for the Winter Semester and in February/March for the Summer Semester. Please be aware that only 8% of applicants are able to receive a room in residence halls. Long waiting times are common. Residence in a hall is limited to 7 semesters. FINANCING YOUR STUDIES.
for further information see the German site:
www.uni-mainz.de/studium/finanzen
The University of Mainz does not verify whether or not you have sufficient funds for a degree course nor does it award any scholarships. Therefore, you must take responsibility for financing your studies. The alien authorities and German consulates check whether you have at least 8,200 Euro per year to cover monthly costs of approximately 670 Euros and more. Rent, groceries and clothing costs a minimum of 400 Euros per month; health insurance, social security contributions etc. can add up to 100 Euros in addition. In Germany, it is common practice to supply the landlord with a rental deposit in the amount of 2-3 months' rent. This means that you will need approx. 1500-2000 Euros in cash or travellers’ cheques in your first month in Germany. As soon as you arrive in Germany, you should open up a bank account showing your admission letter. Bank accounts for students are usually free of charge. In Germany, bank transfers are used to make rent payments, semester contributions, health insurance, etc. Cash payments are expensive, often not accepted and carry the risk that you may lose the cash.
