    FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY

Difference between Psychology and Law & Forensic Psychology

The area of psychology and law deals with all issues that lie at the intersection of human behavior and the law. This encompasses issues that deal with criminal behavior associated with mental illness, police procedures and practices, how to improve the regulation of human behavior through laws, and how basic cognitive research can have important implications for legal issues.
The term "psychology and law" encompasses individuals who work as ‘forensic psychologists‘ (clinicians dealing with mentally ill offenders), criminal psychologists, legal psychologists, and any individual working with the topics of psychology and law.
James Ogloff (2002) prefers the term "legal psychology" over psychology and law, and defines the field as:“Legal psychology is the scientific study of the effect of the law on people; and the effect people have on the law. Legal psychology also includes the application of the study and practice of psychology to legal institutions and people who come into contact with the law." (pp. 13; Ogloff, 2002')

    FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY

difference between Criminology and Forensic Psychology

Anyone who studies crime can call themselves a Criminologist, which means that it really is not a profession. Criminology is a subset of Sociology, and Criminal Justice (CJ) is a subset of Criminology. CJ is the study of police, corrections, and legal functions (but not the study of law, per se, which would lead to a Juris Doctorate), and each of those three are specializations within CJ study. Criminology and CJ can incorporate psychological theory as well as biological/genetic theories of behavior.

There is such a thing as forensic criminology, and some criminologists specialize in areas like criminal profiling, evidence evaluation, and crime reconstruction (Petherick, Turvey, Ferguson, 2010). However, forensic criminology is not widely acknowledged.

Primarily, an academically credentialed Criminologist can teach at the college-level, and possibly consult (but you would probably need some specialization, like corrections, violence in the work place, criminal profiling, etc.).
"Forensic psychology involves application of psychological research, theory, and clinical practice to the legal/criminal justice system…

    • Psychological Evaluation And Expert Testimony
    • Testimony And Evaluation Regarding Civil Issues
    • Assessment, Treatment, And Consultation Regarding Individuals With A High Risk For Aggressive Behavior
    • Research, testimony and consultation on psychological issues impacting on the legal process
    • Specialized treatment service to individuals involved with the legal system
    • Consultation to lawmakers about public policy issues with psychological implications and training to law enforcement, criminal justice, correctional and mental health systems on forensic issues
    • Analysis of issues related to human performance, product liability and safety
    • Court-appointed monitoring of compliance with settlements in class-action suits affecting mental health or criminal justice settings." (Pecano, n.d.)

Few forensic psychologists conduct criminal profiling on a regular basis; however, there are some university programs in England for investigative psychology, such as those taught by Alison (2005) and Canter (2009). Other sub-specialties of Forensic Psychology are:

    • Police Psychology
    • Investigative Psychology and Offender Profiling
    • Criminal Psychology & Criminal Behavior
    • Correctional Psychology
    • Victimology and Victims Services
    • Psychology and the Courts (Pecano, n.d.)

    FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY·

Difference between forensic psychology and forensic psychiatry

Obviously, forensic psychiatrists are psychiatrists and forensic psychologists are clinical psychologists. Psychiatrists go to medical school (4 years) and receive all the normal general physical medicine training required to receive the MD degree. You will then a do a residency in psychiatry, which is 4 more years in length. Depending on how dedicated you are to forensics by that time, you will do a fellowship in forensic psychiatry after residency. On the other hand clincial psychologists receive a Ph.D or Psy.D in clinical psychology, where you will focus exclusively on psychopathology, psychometric assessment of cognitive functioning and personality/emotional functioning, as well as psychotherapy. The Ph.D is a research degree also, so you will get a heavy dose of stats, research methodology and will write a full dissertation in addition to your clinical training. Most of the time, all this training will 4 to 5 years. You will then complete a 1 year full time internship, before officially being awarded the doctorate. Again, depending on how dedicated you are to exclusively doing forensic cases, you may need to take a post-doc for additional training in forensics. Over half of recent doctoral grads are taking post-docs now in something these days. However, if you know at the outset that forensics is your game, I recommend applying to a university that has a clincial forensic specialty track within their clincial program, and to do forensic oriented practicum placement while in training.

The job description of a forensic psychiatrist vs. forensic psychologist will be quite different, although they are often called to give the same types of decisions/opinions (i.e., competency) in a case. However, a psychiatrist will always be the expert in anything medically related that maybe affecting the patient's mental status, and will be the one consulted for decisions about psychopharm interventions. Clinical neuropsychologists (many who specialize in forensic applications of neuropsych) are being pulled into court frequently these days to give opinions as to the cognitive status of individuals, and for the assessment for malingering of neurocogntive deficits and/or psychiatric illness. In addition to clincial interviews, psychologists will utilize standardized psychometric tests of cognitive and emotional status to help answer these questions and refine diagnostic impressions. These tests are also very useful when there is likelihood that the individual in question may be exaggerating or outright faking psychiatric illness in order to get out out of a crime. Psychiatrists are NOT trained in psychometric assessment, so this is something that is a unique contribution of the psychologist.

    Industrial and organizational psychology

In today's competitive world, companies are looking for ways to boost productivity and profits, and one way to do this is to promote job satisfaction and well-being among their employees. Improving workplace efficiency and understanding employee behavior are key objectives for industrial psychologists (sometimes called industrial-organizational psychologists). As a professional in the industrial psychology field, you will enable companies to do the following

Help people do their jobs effectively
    Treat employees fairly

Make jobs more interesting and satisfying

In the other hand, Industrial and organizational psychologists contribute to an organization's success by improving the workplace and the performance, satisfaction and well-being of its people. An I/O psychologist researches and identifies how employee behaviors and attitudes can be improved through hiring practices, training programs, and feedback and management systems. I/O psychologists also help organizations transition among periods of change and development. Industrial and organizational psychology is related to
    organizational behavior and human capital

I–O psychologists are trained in the "scientist-practitioner" model. The expertise of I–O psychologists allows them to employ scientific principles and research-based designs to generate new knowledge and applications for improving organizations. I–O psychologists are employed as professors, researchers, and consultants. They also work within organizations, often as part of a human resources department where they develop, coordinate, and evaluate hiring and organizational development initiatives from an evidence-based perspective.
