Dear Ouldooz,
All students entering UBC without a M.Sc. from a North American University
are placed in the M.Sc. program. Before entering the Ph.D. program, a
student will usually complete a M.Sc. degree including a M.Sc. thesis
reporting on original research.
If you are making excellent progress in your M.Sc. program, it is possible
to transfer into the Ph.D. program within the first year, without
completing a M.Sc. degree. This is a route used by those with M.Sc. degrees
from other disciplines or from institutions outside North America.
Whether you come here as a Master's or as a Ph.D. student, you will need to
take 3 classes each semester your first year here. If you take these
classes as a Master's student, you can count them towards the requirements
of the Ph.D. program when you transfer. So, starting in the Master's
program and transferring to the Ph.D. program after one year will probably
not significantly affect the time that it takes to get a Ph.D. degree.
There can be several advantages to completing a Master's degree here before
starting your Ph.D. Normally, it takes two years to complete a Master's
degree. First, you gain more research experience before you have to choose
a Ph.D. topic. In general, it is preferable that a Ph.D. student chooses
his/her own research topic; most professors here at UBC prefer to advise
students rather than assigning them topics for Ph.D. research. Completing a
research M.Sc. helps you learn to do research on your own, which is very
important after your graduate. The extra experience that you gain by doing
a Master's degree can help you find you own topic for research. Second, you
learn for yourself whether a research career is for you.
Another possibility that completing a M.Sc. degree from UBC offers is that
you can get a job for a year or longer in the North American computer
industry before starting your Ph.D. studies. Computer science research is
closely related to the practical applications of computers, and experience
in industry can be very valuable before starting a Ph.D. Furthermore, the
salaries offered to a computer scientist with a Master's degree can be very
attractive.
We believe that our department can offer you a rewarding time in your
graduate study and that you can make valuable contributions to the research
and teaching activities.
