Workshop on Culture Aware Robotics (and Agent Systems) at AAMAS
    Paris, 06 May 2014
    http://cars.e-hci.org/?page_id=2

Culture is not the first aspect that comes to mind when discussing interactions with agent-based systems (be they virtual or robotic). But our cultural upbringing does to a large degree influence our patterns of behavior and interpretation. Thus, culture is present in the development of agent-based systems right from the start,
unconsciously influencing how systems are designed, what we envision with them to do, and how they are programmed to interact with the user. Thus, culture significantly shapes how we interact with each other and with other social entities such as robots and agents, and a better understanding of cultural differences and commonalities will have significant scientific, design, and societal implications. This workshop aims at improving awareness on the topic and facilitates communication among researchers from different cultures and those interested in culture as a factor in interacting with robots and agents. The scientific focus of the activity is primarily directed to culturally-aware robotics but it is our conviction that many approaches from the agent community are relevant in this field. Thus we also encourage submissions that are not primarily targeting robotics systems.

    Journal of Human-Robot Interaction

Special Issue on: Robots on the Web, in the Cloud, and for the Crowd

    CALL FOR PAPERS

The growth of the Internet and World Wide Web has spurred the rapid
expansion of robotics into society at large. Advances in networking and
cloud computing have promoted robotics applications in areas such as
unmanned flight, hospital delivery, telemedicine, education, assistive
domestic service robots, as well as applications we have yet to conceive
(as was the case from the dawn of the Internet and WWW itself). As
robotics expands beyond research labs, there is a critical need to study,
understand, and improve the ways in which people interact with, operate,
and utilize networked robots across domains.

Connectivity to the Web has changed the way robots collect data, process
data and interact with users. Crowdsourcing has enabled data collection
and labeling at an unprecedented scale, presenting tremendous potential for
acquiring new capabilities through distributed and cloud computation.
Advances in bandwidth and access have led to the development of new forms
of robot control and human-robot interaction over distributed networks.
Human guidance and supervision is becoming increasingly used to ensure
effective robot performance, such as through remote command centers,
adjustable autonomy, and crowdsourcing platforms. Furthermore,
accessibility of web-scale networked robots is broadening access and the
provision of services to populations who have traditionally been isolated
from advances in robotics, such as increasing the independence of the
physically disabled, maintaining social engagement with older adults,
educating from diverse socioeconomic groups, and rethinking labor from the
perspective of remote work through robots.

For this special issue we are soliciting high quality, original articles
that present the design and/or evaluation of robots that are accessible on
the web, use capabilities in the cloud and are enabled for the crowd. We
aim to bring together a wide variety of applications that demonstrate the
    current state-of-the-art in Web/Cloud/Crowd Robotics.

    INDICATIVE TOPICS/AREAS

Topics of interest are, but certainly not limited to, applications of Cloud
Robotics, Networked Robots; Networked Teleoperation; Robot Companions and

    Robotic Sailing

Robotic sailing offers the potential of long range and long term autonomous wind propelled, solar or wave-powered carbon neutral devices. Robotic sailing devices could contribute to monitoring of environmental, ecological, meteorological, hydrographic and oceanographic data. These devices can also be used in traffic monitoring, border surveillance, security, assistance and rescue.
The dependency on changing winds and sea conditions presents a considerable challenge for short and long term route and stability planning, collision avoidance and boat control.
Building a robust and seaworthy sailing robot presents a truly complex and multi-disciplinary challenge for boat designers, naval architects, systems/electrical engineers and computer scientists. Since 2004, competitions such as Sailbot, World Robotic SailingChampionship and Microtransat have sparked an explosion in the number of groups working on autonomous sailing robots. Despite this interest the longest distance sailed autonomously remains only a few hundred miles. Many of the challenges in building truly autonomous sailing robots still remain unsolved.

    IRSC2014
IRSC provides researchers with the opportunity to present and exchange ideas on their work on autonomous surface marine robotics. IRSC proceedings present the cutting edge of work in a variety of fields related to robotic sailing. IRSC 2014 conference proceedings will be published by Springer.

    WRSC2014
WRSC2014 (organised in conjunction with IRSC2014) includes a series of racing, navigation and autonomy challenges. The competition will propose tasks such as station, speed in different conditions, accuracy, obstacle avoidance, target tracking, endurance and cooperation. The competition, originally designed for sailboats also includes a separate motorboats category.
Previous IRSC/WRSC events have been hosted in France (2013), Wales (2012), Germany (2011), Canada (2010), Portugal (09), Austria (08).

    IRSC2014 Paper Submission: Topics
IRSC 2014 welcomes paper submissions on a range of topics around autonomous surface marine robotics (especially sailing robots), including but not limited to:

    * Applications of autonomous marine robots
    * Sensors and actuators for autonomous sailing

    * Hardware and software organisation

Special Issue on Autonomous Underwater Robots

In this Special Issue on Autonomous Underwater Robots, we would like to strengthen this very specific field of applications. When exploring the shallow sea bed, accessing the marine ecosystems, and carrying out oceanographic investigations, a lot of tasks can only be accomplished by underwater robots. Moreover, there is a growing market for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), since manned missions are very expensive. Future drivers for autonomous underwater robotics will be: hydrographic surveys, offshore oil and gas, gas hydrates, marine mineral resources, renewable energy from the sea, ocean research and border security.

The main focus of this special issue is on the most recent theoretical developments, results, and applications in the area of methods for underwater robotics. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

    Robotics
    Visual servoing control
    Machine learning
    Embedded systems
    Multi-agent systems
    Neural network
    Wireless sensor networks
    Mission programming
    Underwater robot navigation
    Dynamics and computational algorithms
    Artificial Intelligence
    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)
    Underwater robot localization

Interested authors should follow the authors' guidelines of Unmanned Systems (available at http://www.worldscientific.com/page/...ion-guidelines) and submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://www.editorialmanager.com/us/. Papers meant for this issue are to be distinguished by selecting the section/category of 'Special Issue on Autonomous Underwater Robots' in the submission procedure.

    Manuscript Due: April, 2014
First Round of Reviews: June, 2014
