    Journal of Field Robotics Special Issue on Low-Altitude Flight of UAVs

    See: http://journalfieldrobotics.org/Special_Issues.html

    Special Issue Guest Editors: Jonathan Roberts (CSIRO), Roland Siegwart (ETH Zurich), Farid Kendoul (CSIRO)

    Recently, there has been growing interest in developing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) with advanced onboard autonomous capabilities. This special issue focuses on recent advances in the development of technologies for automating UAV near Earth or close to Earth flight with a particular emphasis on fully implemented systems that were tested under realistic conditions or even deployed in regular operations. The goal of this special issue is to publish outstanding results in the maturation and field-testing of autonomy technologies that enable low-altitude autonomous flight. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
    - Guidance and control for UAV near Earth flight
    - Autonomous flight inside structures and indoor environments
    - Online mapping and obstacle detection
    - Obstacle field navigation
    - Near-obstacle flight
    - Online and dynamic path planning
    - Terrain following
    - Non-GPS navigation and control
    - Biologically inspired approaches to visual guidance and navigation in cluttered environments

    This special issue is not restricted to any type of UAV platform. However, we will publish only high-quality papers that present real milestones in the area of low altitude autonomous flight with significant experimental results. We also invite application-oriented papers that provide technical description of UAV systems, analysis of results and experimentation, and lessons learned in development and operation of such systems at very low altitudes.

    Papers dedicated to identifying and solving some key issues necessary to extend UAVs low altitude flight and enable new and useful applications are also encouraged. More specifically, we are interested to solicit papers in the areas of GPS vulnerabilities (e.g. spoofing and jamming) and counter-measures, physical interaction of UAVs with the environment, automated aerial refueling/docking, etc. The objective here is to stimulate interest and provide motivation for further research and development in these new research areas.
    JFR encourages multimedia content and we invite authors to submit multimedia attachments to the paper such as videos that illustrate system concept, experiments and operations.

    The AGI 2013 Special Session on Cognitive Robotics

    Cognitive Robotics: Joint Perception, Representation, Action and Learning

    co-located with the 6th Conference on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI 2013)
    http://www.agi-conference.org/2013/

    ** Motivation

    Robot intelligence is a property of complex robot systems which interact with
    real-world environments (including robots themselves). As we expect robots to
    leave safe lab settings and venture into the real-world to take part to our
    everyday life, either at home or in public spaces, the concept of Artificial
    Intelligence as a separable and somewhat peculiar part of robot architectures
    shows its intrinsic limitations.

    The stress on joint perception, representation, action and learning as a theme
    for this special session is motivated by introducing novel Artificial General
    Intelligence principles and methods at various levels of robot architectures,
    with respect to both hardware and software components. It is apparent that, in
    order to cope with the plethora of situations, events, objects, places and
    humans the world is full of, robot intelligence "as it is" is rather
    insufficient.

    This motivates a broad set of activities to enforce the use of Artificial
    General Intelligence techniques in Robotics, involving such different - yet
    intertwined - research areas as multi-modal perception, learning,
    representation and reasoning.

    ** Proceedings

    Proceedings of this event will be part of the main AGI-13 proceedings.

    ** Topics

    The special session will be part of the 6th Conference on Artificial General
    Intelligence, Beijing, China, August 2013. The special session organizers
    warmly invite you to submit articles as well as proposals for demonstrations.
    The deadline for paper submission is the same of the main AGI 2013 conference,
    i.e., March 1, 2013. Articles should describe novel work at the intersection
    between Robotics, cognition and Artificial General Intelligence. Topics
    include, but are not limited to:

    - Robot perception and cognition
    - Multi-modal perception
    - Robot learning frameworks
    - Novel learning approaches
    - Knowledge representation
    - Robot knowledge bootstrapping
    - Epigenetic approaches to build robot minds
    - Reasoning
    - Artificial consciousness
    - Relationships between robot morphology and robot mind
    - Novel cognitive architectures
    - Novel concepts in Human-Robot interaction
    - Relationships between AGI and speech in robots
    - SW architectures supporting AGI in robots

    All the submissions will undergo a single-blind peer-review process. All the
    manuscripts will be reviewed by at least two reviewers, who will be selected
    among the organizers and the members of the program committee. The authors will
    be notified whether their contributions are accepted or not by April 20, 2013.
    Camera-ready versions of accepted papers are due on May 15, 2013.

    ** Author Instructions

    Papers should be formatted conforming to Springer LNAI series template, which
    can be found at

    http://www.springer.com/computer/lnc...=0-40209-0-0-0

    for both LaTeX and Word. In particular, perspective authors should use the "LNCS
    Proceedings and Other Multi-author Volumes" template. Papers must be written in
    English and submitted in PDF format. Two types of submissions are possible: (i)
    full papers (up to 10 pages), describing original research in the areas above
    and (ii) technical communications (up to 4 pages), including preliminary
    results, ideas, commentary and position papers.

    ** Submission

    All the papers in PDF format have to be submitted by sending an e-mail to Fulvio
    Mastrogiovanni at

    fulvio.mastrogiovanni@unige.it.

    In case the first author of the submission is a student, this should be clearly
    stated in the submission e-mail, in order for the paper to be considered for
    the Best Student Paper prize. Furthermore, since AGI 2013 will include also a
    Demonstration session, papers with an accompanied demonstration are
    particularly welcome.

    ** Key Dates

    March 1 2013: Full paper submission
    April 20, 2013: Acceptance notification
    May 15, 2013: Submission deadline of camera-ready version

    Int. J. Robotics Research (IJRR) Special issue on Robot Vision

    Guest Editors
    ------------------

    - Jana Kosecka (Department of Computer Science, George Mason University, USA),
    - Eric Marchand (IRISA, Universit? de Rennes 1, France)
    - Peter Corke (School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Queensland University of Technology, Australia)

    Scope
    --------

    Recent advances in computer vision are increasingly being applied to robots to augment, and even to replace other robot sensors such as odometry, laser rangefinders and GPS. Unlike active rangefinders, computer vision is low-cost, small in size and passive, and unlike GPS it can operate in environments such as indoors, underground, underwater and space.

    Following on from the phenomenal success of the previous Special Issues on Vision & Robotics (2007, 2010 and 2012) IJRR announces a new Special Issue on Robot Vision. Original submissions are sought to present recent advances in vision theory and methods and its application to robotics including:

    * Visual odometry
    * Visual navigation
    * Visual manipulation, including object recognition and pose estimation
    * Integration or fusion of vision with other sensing modalities
    * Visual SLAM, semantic SLAM
    * Visual place recognition
    * Vision-based control
    * Visual tracking
    * Robust vision techniques
    * Novel visual sensors (RGB-D, HDR, wide field of view cameras, etc.)
    * Interaction/fusion with other sensors (force, tactile, etc.)
    * Novel computational algorithms and architectures
    * Metrics for performance and robustness of vision systems
    * Robot vision applications (space robotics, underwater robotics, manufacturing, manipulation, etc.)

    Experimental results are particularly encouraged. Please note that the Journal has no page limit on papers and is a leader in archival publishing of data sets, code and videos with papers. For full guidelines see:
