    6th Workshop on Human-Friendly Robotics
    http://hfr13.wordpress.com/
    DIAG, Sapienza Universit? di Roma
    September 25--26, 2013

    Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit an abstract to the 6th edition of the "Workshop on Human Friendly Robotics" http://hfr13.wordpress.com/

    MOTIVATION AND OBJECTIVES

The growing need to automate daily tasks combined with new robot technologies are driving the development of human-friendly robots,
i.e., safe and dependable machines, operating in the close vicinity to humans or directly interacting with persons in a wide range of domains.
The technology shift from classical industrial robots, which are safely kept away from humans in cages, to robots,
which will be used in close collaboration with humans, requires major technological challenges that need to be overcome.

The objective of the workshop is to bring together and share knowledge between researchers on Human-Friendly Robotics
from design and control towards safety and ethical issues involving the introduction of robots into everyday life.

    LIST OF TOPICS

    - Fundaments of human-friendly robots: mechatronic design, control, analyses (safety measurements, performance metrics, impedance estimation, etc.)
    - Applications of human-friendly robots: physical interaction (medical and rehabilitation devices, prostheses and orthoses, telerobotics, etc.)
and cognitive interaction (robot assisted therapy, personal and entertainment robots, robot learning, etc.)
    - Social and ethical issues

    CONTRIBUTIONS

Prospective authors should submit an extended abstract (one A4 page, in PDF format) to hfr13@dis.uniroma1.it by July 15, 2013.

ICLP 2013 Workshop on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in Robotics

    Location: Istanbul, Turkey.
Date of Workshop: August 25, 2013.

    Workshop web site: http://www.cs.ttu.edu/~smohan/krr_iclp13/

    ***********************

Mobile robots (and agents) are increasingly being used in a range of
application domains such as disaster rescue, surveillance, health care
and navigation. A formidable challenge to the widespread deployment of
robots in our homes, offices and other complex domains is the ability
to represent, reason with and revise incomplete and inconsistent
domain knowledge obtained from sensor inputs and high-level human
feedback. Although many algorithms have been developed for
representing and reasoning with domain knowledge, the research
community is fragmented, with separate vocabularies that are
increasingly (and ironically) making it difficult for these
researchers to communicate with each other. As a result, the rich body
of research in knowledge representation for cognitive agents is not
fully exploited by robotics researchers. For instance, declarative
programming paradigms provide non-monotonic reasoning capabilities
essential for robotics, although they do not always consider the
challenge of modeling the uncertainty in robot application domains. In
parallel, many robotics researchers are developing probabilistic
reasoning algorithms that elegantly model the uncertainty in sensing
and navigation on robots, although it is a challenge to use such
algorithms to represent and reason with commonsense knowledge. In
recent years, algorithms have also been developed for combining
logical and probabilistic reasoning, but these algorithms do not
support the desired knowledge representation and reasoning
capabilities, or fail to address problems that are well understood in
    the logic programming community.

The objective of this workshop is to promote a deeper understanding of
recent breakthroughs and tough challenges in the logical programming
and probabilistic robotics communities, resulting in collaborative
efforts towards addressing the knowledge representation and reasoning
challenges in robotics. Topics of interest include (but are not
    limited to):

    * Knowledge acquisition and representation.
    * Reasoning with incomplete and inconsistent knowledge.
    * Reasoning about actions and change.
    * Planning and scheduling.
    * Learning and symbol grounding.
    * Cognitive architectures.
    * Multiagent systems.

We are especially interested in papers describing efforts to integrate
knowledge representation, logical reasoning and/or probabilistic
reasoning on robots and agents in different application domains.

Third International Conference on ALGORITHMIC DECISION THEORY

    Brussels, Belgium, Nov. 13-15, 2013

    www.adt2013.org

The International Research Group on Algorithmic Decision Theory in
collaboration with the European working group on preferences is proud to
announce the Third International Conference on Algorithmic Decision
Theory (ADT 2013). ADT seeks to bring together researchers and
practitioners coming from diverse areas such as Artificial Intelligence,
Database Systems, Operations Research, Decision Theory, Discrete
Mathematics, Game Theory, Multiagent systems, Computational Social
Choice, and Theoretical Computer Science in order to improve the theory
and practice of modern decision support and automation systems. The
contemporary theory and practice of decision theory and decision
analysis must account for the presence of massive databases containing
data extracted from the web or via data mining, combinatorial
structures, partial and/or uncertain information, and distributed,
possibly interoperating decision makers, and the existence of masses of
potential users on the web. Such problems arise in various real-world
decision making problems such as electronic commerce, and recommender
systems, network optimization (communication, transport, energy), risk
    assessment and management, e-government.
ADT provides a multi-disciplinary forum for sharing knowledge in this
area with a special focus on algorithmic issues in Decision Theory. The
two first International Conference on Algorithmic Decision Theory (ADT
2009, 2011) brought together researchers and practitioners from diverse
areas of computer science, economics, and operations research from
around the globe, with proceedings published in LNAI 5783 and LNAI 6992.
ADT 2013 seeks to continue this tradition and invites technical research
    papers on the following areas:

    - Algorithmic Challenges to Modern Decision Support and Automation
    - Uncertainty and Robustness in Decision Making
    - Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis and optimization
    - Collective Decision Making
    - Preferences in Reasoning and Decision Making
    - Decision Theoretic Artificial Intelligence
    - Learning and Knowledge Extraction for Decision Support

More specifically contributions to the conference are sought in the
following topics: Preference Modeling and Aggregation; Multiobjective
    optimization; Planning and Sequential Decision Making under uncertainty;
Robustness in Decision Making; Computational Social Choice; Compact
Representation of Preferences; Preference Elicitation, Queries in Data
Bases; Universal Languages for Preferences; Efficient Algorithms for
Decision Making and Support; Multi-Agent Systems; Algorithmic Game
Theory ; Communication Complexity; Argumentation and Explanation in
Decision Support; Preferences and Policies Learning; Knowledge
Extraction; Algorithm Tuning; Recommender Systems; Decision Support
    Systems.

The ADT 2013 Program Committee invites submissions of technical research
papers that will be reviewed based on the standard criteria of clarity,
relevance, significance, originality, and soundness. These papers are
expected to convey substantial technical contributions to the field, or
to describe case studies and deployed applications, all placed in the
    context of existing work.

    Important dates:

    euRathlon WORKSHOP ON FIELD ROBOTICS
    24-25 September 2013, Berchtesgaden, Germany
in conjunction with the euRathlon 2013 competition
    http://www.eurathlon2013.eu/

This is a call for posters in the interactive session of the workshop. We
are pleased to offer an opportunity not only to participate in the workshop
as an attendee, but also to present a poster during the interactive session
to discuss ideas with other workshop participants.

    OVERVIEW AND AIMS:
This workshop is focused on euRathlon scenarios and applications, and
intended primarily for student and researcher competitors or teams planning
to compete in euRathlon. Its aim is to build a shared understanding of the
major challenges of real-world robotics and cross-fertilising ideas across
research communities in land, underwater and flying robotics domains. The
workshop will provide an opportunity for attendees to deepen their
understanding of autonomous outdoor robotics, to share ideas and
experience, and to prepare themselves for euRathlon competitions.

euRathlon is a new outdoor robotics competition that invites teams to test
the intelligence and autonomy of their robots in realistic, demanding mock
emergency-response scenarios inspired by the Fukushima accident. A
competition for land-based vehicles in 2013 will be followed by one for
underwater robots in 2014 with the final competition in 2015 where there
will be possibility of terrestrial, marine and aerial robots to work
collaboratively to survey the scene (land, air and water), collect
environmental data and identify critical hazards.

The workshop is structured in two parts: first, expert content will be
delivered by invited keynote speakers and end users, i.e. professionals
working in respective scenario fields like fire fighting and rescuing
operation. Second, the workshop participants will have the opportunity to
present their own work in the interactive session of the workshop.

We invite submissions which focus on topics closely related to the
competition: on topics of unmanned ground, air, sea vehicles and their
combination on real systems (outdoor activity, no simulation!). We are
stressing real applications. We welcome submissions from non-competitors,
if they are within the scope. We encourage especially young researchers to
participate. There will be the possibility to earn study credits (doctoral
or basic) from the workshop. For students we also provide the possibility
    of getting travel support.

    SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Posters for the interactive session should be submitted via email in PDF
format to Prof. Juha R?ning (juha.roning@oulu.fi). For the review the
material for the posters is asked to be provided in the from of short
paper. Submissions should be no more than 4 ISO A4 pages long, including
figures, tables and references. Please to use IEEE format.

by the increasing number of available platforms and the huge number of
high-quality publications in the research area of navigation and motion
planning for humanoids. Recently, a lot of progress has been made in the
areas of 3D perception, efficient environment representation, fast
collision checking, as well as motion planning for navigation and
manipulation with humanoids, also under uncertainty and real-time
constraints. All these techniques work well for their independent
application scenario, however, currently no system exists that combines
the individual approaches. Thus, we are still far from the deployment of
a humanoid robot in the real world. The goal of this special issue is to
identify gaps in the research directions and to discuss which aspects
need to be considered for combining the different approaches so as to
enable humanoids to reliably act and navigate in real environments for
an extended period of time. This objective is in line with some of the
target scenarios of the new DARPA Robotics Challenge program indicating
the relevance of this research area.

All the submissions for the special issue of the IJHR will undergo the
    regular IJHR review process.
