Special Issue on "Haptics in Rehabilitation and Neural Engineering" - IEEE Transactions on Haptics

Robotic devices have been shown to be effective at delivering the
intensive and repetitive therapy that is known to induce brain
plasticity and foster restoration of motor coordination after stroke,
spinal cord injury, and other neural impairments. Engagement of the
sensorimotor system, including haptic feedback to the participant during
rehabilitation, is an important factor in regaining motor control.
Further, haptic feedback can enhance the natural control, utility, and
efficacy of advancement of prosthetic and orthotic devices that restore
mobility and manipulability to lower- and upper-extremity amputees.
However, advanced prosthetic devices, for example, have decoupled the
normal afferent-efferent loop and rely heavily on visual feedback to the
amputee for control in the absence of haptics.
The science and technology of haptics thus has great potential to affect
the outcomes of rehabilitation and adoption of advanced prosthetic and
orthotic devices. This special issue is about understanding the role of
touch in sensorimotor coordination, including rehabilitation of motor
deficits and use of advanced prostheses and orthoses.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

    1. Rehabilitation robots that employ kinaesthetic or tactile feedback
    for enhancement of therapeutic results
    2. Sensory-motor neuroscience studies that leverage haptic systems for
    assessment and/or analysis
    3. Using haptics to improve the performance of advanced orthoses and
    prostheses

The organizers invite you to attend the first workshop on
PRESENT AND FUTURE OF NON-INVASIVE PNS-MACHINE INTERFACES,
co-located with ICORR 2013 in Seattle, USA.

This workshop is about human-machine interfaces which connect non-invasively to the peripheral nervous system (PNS-MIs), surface electromyography (sEMG) being the paradigmatic PMI. sEMG is in use since the 60s to proportionally control single-DoFs hand prostheses; since then, literally dozens different approaches have been applied to sEMG to decode an amputee's intentions, but none of them have as yet made it to the clinics. Nevertheless, dexterous prosthetic hands are now appearing on the market, demanding ever better control by the patient.

So, how can we bridge this gap? We address four fundamental sub-problems:

    1. what is wrong with the current approach? why do clinicians not use it?
    2. how can we better use sEMG?
    3. what alternative, radically new solutions are available, if any?
    4. what are the benefits of sharing control between the human subject and the prosthesis?

The workshop revolves around the four themes spanned by the above questions: current limitations, sEMG, novel techniques and control. The workshop will bring together roboticists, clinicians and neuroscientists interested in these questions. Participation of interested young scientists, whose interaction with the experts will foster discussion and possibly indicate some ways ahead, is highly encouraged.

    Our speakers will be:

IEEE/NSF Workshop: Cloud Manufacturing and Automation

Aug 17, 2013, CASE Conference: Madison, Wisconsin
    http://case2013.org/WorkshopTutorials/CMA.html

This one-day IEEE/NSF workshop will explore the potential for Cloud
Computing to dramatically improve manufacturing and automation. Cloud
Computing and related topics such as G.E.'s Industrial Internet,
Germany's Industry 4.0, and the Internet of Things have the potential
to remove current computation and memory limitations of robotic and
automation systems and vastly increase availability of real-time data.
Cloud Computing can also provide rapid access to computing power,
crowd sourcing, and open-source softwar. Many new research problems
arise, such as architecture, security, performance/speed tradeoffs,
standards, uncertainty, reliability, planning and scheduling. This
workshop will provide a forum to present new developments and explore
future topics and jointly prepare a report on this emerging topic.

The U.S. National Science Foundation has provided limited funding for
domestic travel and registration for participants from
U.S. Institutions (academic or industry). If you are interested in
participating and/or speaking, please send your proposed presentation
title, abstract, and your affiliation/contact info in an email to all
co-organizers by 11 July. NSF Travel Funding Grants will be determined
by 15 July. Amounts depend on number of applicants and distance
    travelled.

Call for Papers for a Special Issue on
Advanced Motion Control for Mechatronic Systems

Modern industrial machines rely on fast and accurate motion systems to achieve ever increasing product quality and productivity requirements. Typical examples of such motion systems include high-speed displacement of silicon wafers in a lithography process and nano-scale imaging in atomic force microscopes. A key step in achieving increased speed and accuracy requirements can be realised by the design of advanced motion control systems. The goal of this special issue is to bring together the recent research outcomes in the field of high-precision mechatronic systems and advanced motion control.

We solicit for papers that address the development of novel mechanical structures, actuators and sensors for motion control systems; system identification of mechatronic systems; and advanced motion control techniques ranging from linear robust control to nonlinear intelligent control methods. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
? Modal analysis and system identification
? Novel mechanisms, actuators and sensors for motion control systems
    ? Robust and nonlinear control
    ? Intelligent motion control strategies
? Multi-rate control and visual servoing
? Advanced servo techniques in industrial mechatronic systems
