Research Fellow/ PhD position in Spanish Language and Latin American Studies


At the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen, there is a vacant three-year position as research fellow (PhD student) in Spanish Language and Latin American Studies, starting 1 January 2010.

The position is connected to the research project “Linguistic Identity and Attitudes in Spanish-speaking Latin America” (LIAS) headed by Associate Professor Ana Beatriz Chiquito and Professor Miguel Ángel Quesada Pacheco. The project period is August 2009 – June 2012.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Spanish Language or equivalent education, e.g. Licenciatura or Maestría. A Research interest in Spanish sociolinguistics or the study of language attitudes is an advantage.

The research fellow will participate in the analysis of the collected data and is expected to work within the project on tasks within the theory and methods of linguistic attitudes. It is assumed that the fellow is qualified to analyze data using statistical techniques for linguistic purposes.

The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD program leading to a PhD degree within a time limit of 3 years.

Salaries start at salary level 45 (code 1017) in the Civil Service Salary Scale, at present NOK 355 400, - p.a.). Further salary increases follow normal civil service seniority regulations.

An international committee of experts will evaluate the candidates. The main emphasis of the evaluation will be placed on the candidate’s research potential as evidenced by her or his Master’s thesis (or equivalent), other scholarly works (if available), the candidate’s project proposal, and other relevant qualifications.
