Computational methods for robust control of large-scale interconnected systems
    KU Leuven, Belgium
    Deadline: 15 Oct 2015

    Project
The dynamic behavior of a linear time-invariant system is determined by the solutions of an eigenvalue problem. Dynamical systems are often subject to physical parameters with an important level of uncertainty. Application engineers then want to know how sensitive the system is with respect to these parameters, for example, how much a parameter may change without losing stability or a performance level. This leads us to eigenvalue problems with uncertainty. The question how the performance or robustness of the system can be optimized by a careful choice of design parameters or by active or passive control, leads us to eigenvalue optimization problems.
Recently, significant advances have been obtained on robust control design approaches, which are grounded in eigenvalue optimization, as well as on solving nonlinear eigenvalue problems, which arise in the analysis of classes of large-scale systems. The aim of the PhD project is to shift the state-of-the-art from control of stand-alone systems to large networks of interconnected systems. The goal is to compute simple controllers, which are easy to implement, and possibly decentralized, i.e., where a global objective is reached by local actions. The project will be realized by combining advances in numerical linear algebra, control theory, numerical optimization, and approximation theory.
The methods and algorithms are validated on problems from mechanical and electrical engineering (traffic flow control, communication networks, ...), through ongoing collaborations with application oriented research groups.

Keywords: numerical linear algebra, dynamical systems, control and optimization, uncertainty quantification

    Profile
An ideal candidate has a master degree in computational / applied mathematics, or engineering, a strong interest in optimization, experience with algorithm development, and enthusiasm for the project. Proficiency in English is a requirement.

Besides a competitive salary and mobility allowance we offer a stimulating research environment, with a lot of attention paid to personal career development, within the Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics Section of KU Leuven (https://wms.cs.kuleuven.be/groups/natw), the KU Leuven Optimization in Engineering Center OPTEC (http://set.kuleuven.be/optec/), and the national network DYSCO (http://sites.uclouvain.be/dysco/)

Exploiting dynamic models in a virtual sensing context - applications in mechanics and mechatronics
    Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
    Deadline: Sat, 31 Oct 2015

    Project
In industry, there is a clear paradigm shift towards frontloading the design changes using high-fidelity models and diminishing the amount of physical prototypes. To assess the quality of each physical prototype and compare it with its virtual counterpart, the use of model identification and uncertainty quantification techniques are key. An approach like coupled state-input-parameter estimation allows us to update the uncertain parameters and evaluate how well the model corresponds to reality. Moreover, this technique synchronizes the model with the measurements and generates additional information about the prototype which could not be measured directly.

The use of models in combination with measurements to create additional 'sensors' is also known as 'virtual sensing'. In this research trajectory, the applicant will be embedded in the noise and vibration 'virtual sensing'-group to further develop virtual sensors methodologies forelectro-mechanical drivetrains using high-fidelity models. This research field is multidisciplinary as it deals both with experimental testing as well as high-fidelity modelling. The advancements can be made on the modelling side by developing parametric model order reduction techniques, the experimental side to define optimal trajectories for model identification or on the synergy between both where models and measurements are evaluated together to achieve the most suitable measurement set.

The Noise and Vibration research group is looking for different profiles to join the team on dynamic analysis of multiphysical systems. As well research engineers, PhD students as postdoctoral researchers are welcomed to apply.

    Profile
We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic, communicative and eager to learn researchers with a Master of Science inEngineering (preferably in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering). The candidates should have a strong background and interest in dynamic system analysis, numerical modelling and mechatronics.
