both have their negative and positives ; but it is totally dependent on the exceptions of a univ and those of an adviser
some advisers seek to extract most efficiency of their students;regardless of their time spent at labs!!!
In contrary to this some ask their students to work hard doing research as much time as possible dedicating more energy even the due work has already done
I have been lucky as my adviser falls into the first group, so in the case of me, I , as a RA, would again prefer to be a RA rather than be a TA
I have spent a lot of my life on being a teacher in back home country and I m fed up with being again doing exam papers and teaching; also as some of you mentioned above, yes I agree that for a research leading to PhD thesis and getting into a profession earlier, RAs are much more profitable
Narrowed down to a single word we could see both sides in RA and TA depending upon our and our adviser expectations and easiness
