Completely true. They use GMAT only as a first pass filter not an entry ticket. Also, donot pay much attention to the posted average GMATs on their websites. - normally the people who get in have a score over 700 and there are so many applicants with over 750 score, so do not think that 730 gets you in. A high GMAT score just help you incrementally. and helps to imrpove your image. You need to have very good in english which should be reflected in your SOP CV emails and etc.
Couple of points:
Don't try to find funding through faculties. There is no external funding in Finance. All of Ph.D. support is coming from school not your advisor - completely different from engineering schools. Contacting faculties only helps if you have a very good record and can impress the faculty, who happens to be in the admission committee.
Understand the competition. A Ph.D. graduate from top 20 US schools earn well over 180,000$ right after graduation and everyone knows this, so expect a brutal competition. You have to exactly know where the field is and where it is heading. There is a huge difference between what you learn there and what it is done in world. Learn about current research from faculties' websites from top schools or top journals, JF, JFE, JFQA, RFS. It will help you a lot when you write your SOP and don't try to brag a lot on your SOP ( you will later see how different SOPs look when someone actually know about the subject. You won't see it as a newbie but a faculties learn exactly how much you know.
This is the truth: most of programs invite people to onsite interviews so that they minimize the risk of admitting the wrong person - most of schools have only 2-3 spots per year. Being abroad reduces your chance a lot - it is not fair I know but it is the rational response from them. Being from Iran is another negative point. Not so many students are from Iran, so they don't know Iranian schools and Iranian students while they are biased towards students from countries that they already have a student from. Also the truth is that Iran is not a capitalist country, so even if you study economics in Iran, what you learn there is not comparable. This also hits you with your CV. Most of the applicants already have some sort of experience in the field of finance ( job, internship, thesis, degree, training program) , but you are not able to do that.
My tips:
Try to improve your english as much as you can. You need to write concise, clear, and natural - unfortunately, our writings look awkward until we spend a lot of time reading and writing in english. For GMAT, you need to look into 700+ scores for top 30 US schools to make up for ohter things.
I can tell top 10 schools are not achievable for us - you need to be in US (maybe europe) with a Ms./Bs. from top 10-15 school with sold CV (research or useful work experience - e.g. working in Credit risk desk of some investment bank...). For top 50 you have chances, but not that acceptance rate is around 5% and applicants pool is good. Even some American applicants apply to 20+ schools and they only get 2-3 offers. Expect to get 1 admission out of 3-5 interviews (they had 12-15 onsite interviews for 5 spots and so many Skype interviews).
In summary, I can think of two strategies: 1) apply from Iran, but put a lot of effor by getting GMAT 700-710+ and do a great job with your CV, SOP and your grades (given that you have a relevant Ms. degree in Econ. MBA or so from a good school like Sharif Tehran. For this strategy you need to apply to so many places and you need to have a solid application.
The other strategy invloves going to US. or Europe and and getting a M.S. degree in Finance, MBA, Statistics, or etc and build your CV while you are doing your Ms. by internship, research projects and other stuff. The thing is that, once you get out you have a lot of options to imrpove your CV and english. The only problem is that most of finance and MBA Ms are not funded and only few provide partial funding, so you have to search and those spots are so competetive. One way to do that is doing your Ms. in statistics or some other preferably related major and taking finance courses so that you could use your funding to take finance courses.
In the end, you need some exposure to finance and solid statistics knowledge and very good english. No one expects publication - I donot know who the hell said that you need a publication in top journals ). People get tenure track from top 20 US schools with 4 publications in top 3 journals. Each paper in finance takes 2-3 years of time of an experience researcher with access to expensive data and after that there is only 10% acceptance rate for top 10 journals. Again, think about it people can get a permanent salary of over 200,000$ if they can publish 4 top journal papers in 5 years and most of them can't and these are the peoples that already graduated from top 20 finance Ph.D. schools so they are not stupid.
Hope this helps and sorry for the messy format. Apparently no one is allowed to type in english here and they will delete this post shortly - I hope not because I gathered this info in 3 years.
