Well that's the point I think Scandinavian countries are very very well paid countries and high quality of life and I think since there were few students who've chose to study in Nordic then it is a little bit unclear for many to analyse how is the qualiy of education. although it has been changed alot specially in recent years and people start to think about Nordic. I have not been in the US but AMONG THOSE COUNTRIES I have lived I do believe that the equipment, fund and the collaboration with leading research laboratories in Nordic universities are the best.
About living costs I should say Nordic countries plus Switzerland are most expensive countries in Europe. I think you relatively pay more than everywhere for the same stuff you pay alot of tax(34%). but you get very good life style back. I think in Norway which is perhaps the most expenive country in Nordic(Except Iceland) you need around 13000 NOK fro a very good lifestyle that I don't think you can have with the PhD financial support in many countries even the USA. You get paid around 18000 NOK and you live a very good life with 13000NOK and you save 5000NOK. I should tell you that 13000NOK is quite high and you do many think such as travelling ,....
So I think Denmark is also perfect if you want to live a good life.
If you come to do your MSc I think in Europe you need around 500-600 Euro per month. Personally I lived with 5000 SEK per month in Sweden and my living situation was OK I could not go travelling with this money but I think it was OK.
