Customs Tax on Labor Done Outside the Country
Canada Border Services Agency is mandated by the Canadian government to collect certain taxes on items being brought into the country. Those most familiar include the goods and services tax, the harmonized services tax, provincial taxes and duty. These charges are determined by a border services officer.
However, according to Anna Cape, media relations expert for the Canada Border Services Agency, or CBSA,
you pay no customs taxes at the border on money earned in another country. “
Customs does not tax people’s income,” Cape explains. “They do tax goods that people import into the country.”
Declarations Over $10,000
Money laundering in Canada is estimated to be a billion dollar problem, according to CBSA. To deter this, the government has put into place the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act.
If you work outside the country and return with a payment of more than $10,000, whether in cash, cheque, money order or electronically transferred funds, under this act you are required to claim the payment at the border.
“Bringing $10,000 or more back into Canada is not illegal, it just has to be reported so that CBSA can determine if it was legally acquired,” Cape explains. “These funds, however, are not taxed at the border.
