If you didn't get back from a professor, it donest necessarily mean something is wrong with you! Sometimes, something is wrong with professors like they dont have funding, do they dont reply such emails, they are traveling and they missed your email, they prefer to hire students that are recommended by other faculty members and alot more reasons for not replying an email, and one of them can be something is wrong with your email.
As long as you have enough background in a field, you will be fine, and it doesnt matter what you did in your thesis (mostly).I know some students with bachelor and master in electrical engineering and now they have PhD in economics!!!!
If you want to change your research area and you dont have enough background on new area, in that case something is wrong with your resume, mean miss match!
A General point about professors webpage:
Most of them ( usually assistant professors are exceptions as they need to show how good they are!) are not updated and doesnt represent current research interests of that professor. It is good to research for their recent publications to see what they are doing now.
