About Daejeon
Overview
The city's name comes from the Chinese characters 大(dae) and 田(jeon), which means "great field." Daejeon is the fifth largest city in Korea after Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and Incheon with a population of approximately 1.5 million people on an area of 540km2 (the total area of the Korean peninsula is 222,154km2). Daejeon was formerly the capital of Chungcheongnam-do (province), which still maintains its administrative head office in the city. It was upgraded to a metropolitan city in 1995. Currently there are 7 metropolitan cities in Korea. Located in the center of Korea, Daejeon serves as a hub of transportation. Major expressways and railways connecting the country from the north to south converge in Daejeon. With this wonderful transportation network, it is possible to travel anywhere in the country within half a day from Daejeon.
Location
Daejeon is located in the mid-southern part of the South Korean peninsula and is a gateway to Jeolla, Gyeongsang and Chungcheong provinces. Daejeon is 167.3 km away from Seoul, 294 km from Busan, and 169km from Gwangju. Gyeongbu and Honam Expressways pass through Daejeon, which also has the Tongyeong-Daejeon Expressway heading South. Roads spread out in all directions. The operation of the rapid transit railway shortens travel time between Seoul and Daejeon to less than 1 hour, enhancing the reputation of Daejeon as a hub city of Korea.
Climate
The overall climate of Korea is characterized by four distinct seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Springs are warm and clear. Summers are mostly hot, humid, and rainy due to the maritime Pacific highs. Autumns are cool and clear, and winters are bitterly cold and dry due to the influence of the Siberian air masses. The average temperatures in all seasons are somewhat lower than those at corresponding latitudes in North America and Western Europe. The average annual temperature of Daejeon is 12.3°C(Celsius). January, the coldest month, has an average temperature of -1.9°C and August, the hottest month, has an average temperature of 25.5°C. The highest temperature ever recorded was 37.7°C (July 24, 1994), and the lowest was -19.0°C (February 6, 1969). Korea's average annual precipitation is 1,353mm, but the amount of precipitation varies greatly according to the season. In the summer months, due to the North Pacific high atmospheric pressures, the region receives 55 percent of its precipitation, while the month of December has the lowest precipitation rate.
