Serves as an independent scientist performing post-doctoral research as part of a multi- disciplinary research team studying inactivation of a broad spectrum of pathogens and parasites using a family of novel, biodegradable disinfectants. The range of organisms include bacterial endospores and vegetative cells (planktonic and on surfaces), viruses, and helminth eggs. The work requires a professional knowledge of biological sciences to include microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
1. Participates in designing, planning, and organizing research strategies to be used in projects. Independently designs and runs experiments to study inactivation of pathogens and parasites using biodegradable disinfectants. Prepares detailed plan of research and required resources for supervisory review, to include designation of research topics and projects for undergraduate research. Supervises and provides technical guidance to undergraduate researchers. Ensures adherence to safety regulations, laboratory protocols and departmental standards. Maintains detailed records of research activity and findings. Provides periodic work reviews to supervisor and discusses experimental designs, data and conclusions. Participates in planning future research activities for the team. 70%
2. Participates in nationally recognized conferences and other meetings in order to present or discuss research findings and critical stages of investigations and to obtain the latest research information. As recognized specialist in assigned area, serves as technical advisor to other USMA scientific personnel providing authoritative advice in response to inquiries concerning research areas assigned. Conducts periodic literature surveys and monitors development of new technologies and new research and independently evaluates their potential for use in the research project. Establishes and maintains contact with government academic and industrial groups, and individuals to exchange the latest information, keep abreast of pertinent scientific developments in order to exchange information, do collaborative research, and present data.
