    Post-doc: Synergy for Oil, Gas & Geothermal Exploration
    Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
    Deadline: 15-11-2015
    The focus of this 3-year research project is to develop scenarios and models for the potential use of geothermal hot fluid for enhanced recovery of heavy oil, and production from marginally economic gas fields by water injection from a geothermal doublet project. Applying such approaches will result in efficient-energy recovery from stranded fields and can make production from these fields profitable.

    This project aims at developing a field-scale model to represent the non-isothermal single- and two-phase flow processes taking place in the subsurface. A coupled numerical model that considers hydrocarbon and heat production from different geological formations needs to be developed and applied to two hydrocarbon fields in the Netherlands. The detailed geological models need to be constructed based on the sequence stratigraphy principles. Several field development scenarios will be advanced in cooperation with stakeholders.

    Requirements
    We are looking for an inspiring, self-motivated candidate to conduct a project involving energy recovery from the subsurface in the Netherlands by an industrial partner. You have a PhD degree in petroleum engineering, hydrogeology, or earth sciences. You are enthusiastic about fundamental research with a close link to the petroleum and geothermal industry. Experience in two-phase flow numerical simulation and skills in various programming languages such as C++ and Fortran are a must. Knowledge and experience in geological modelling, discrete fracture modelling, fracture geomechanics and working with petroleum software such as ECLIPSE are preferred. Good communication skills are essential for the successful execution of the project.

    Information and application
    For more information about this position, please contact Hamid Nick, h.m.nick@tudelft.nl. To apply, please e-mail a detailed CV, summary of academic record and research experience, list of any publications, list of two references, and a letter of application by 15 November 2015 to D.W.A.M. Verbunt, Recruitment-CiTG@tudelft.nl.

    PhD student and Postdoc positions - Research Team in Numerical modelling of EOR/IOR processes
    Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
    Deadline: 20 November 2015

    The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for positions on investigations of mechanisms and models in the context of advanced water flooding. Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU is established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. As part of a national strategy on oil and gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to improve recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. The first of the cross-disciplinary flagship programmes of the centre is advanced water flooding of the Dan, Halfdan, and Kraka oil fields.

    Responsibilities and tasks
    The positions will be an integrated part of the advanced water flooding programme with the focus on improving oil recovery in chalk reservoirs in the Danish part of the North Sea. In this context, the team is expected to perform innovative, fundamental and applied research on:
    Novel tools for numerical modelling of water based recovery processes, e.g. SmartWater, surfactant, and microbial EOR methods
    Understanding of fracture-matrix interactions and recovery from fractured reservoirs
    Upscaling of multiphase flow on scales ranging from the core to field scale
    Optimizing advanced recovery methods through system understanding for better field development
    To better understand and test the suitable recovery method at the core, sector, and reservoir scale, detailed heterogeneity and coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes should be taken into account in the numerical simulators. These often result in increased computational cost for individual simulation runs. Reducing the computational complexity of modelling of such processes is, therefore, essential. For field-scale models, employing reliable macroscopic laws capturing the integral effects of fractures on multiphase flow are necessary. In order to have predictive capabilities, field-scale models should capture the interplay between different multiphysical processes. To this end, reliable modeling techniques need to be developed and verified to integrate the key THMC processes, and geo-models in the reservoir simulators.

    The team should assist to set-up and develop various numerical tools tailored for modelling of the relevant EOR/IOR methods. It will contribute to shaping a computational modelling lab at the centre. Co-supervising of Ph.D./MSc students working with reservoir simulation and collaboration with other researchers and students working with advanced water flooding experiments are required. The team will participate in a growing cross-disciplinary research program, involving several researchers at DTU and other Danish universities, research institutes, and industry. The team will have access to unique field and laboratory data sets to test concepts and methods developed at the centre

    Qualifications
    Ph.D. students: M.Sc. degree in petroleum, hydrogeology or chemical engineering, applied mathematics or other relevant areas;
    Postdocs: Ph.D. degree in petroleum, hydrogeology or chemical engineering, applied mathematics or other relevant areas;
    Excellent skills in numerical modelling and programming;
    Exceptional skills in mathematics, physics and chemistry;
    Interest in independent research;
    Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment;
    Good writing and communication skills in English;
    For the PhD position
    The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

    PhD student and Postdoc positions - Research Team in Reservoir Fluid Characterization
    Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
    Deadline: 20 November 2015

    The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for positions on investigations of oil recovery mechanisms in the context of advanced water flooding. Centre for Oil and Gas – DTU is established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. As part of a national strategy on oil and gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to improve recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea. Responsibilities and tasks
    The positions will be an integrated part of the advanced water flooding programme with the focus on improving oil recovery in chalk reservoirs in the Danish part of the North Sea. In this context, the team is expected to perform innovative, fundamental, and applied research on:
    Setting up an analytical laboratory for reservoir brine and petroleum fluid characterization
    Studies of rock-fluid interactions to understand the effect of different petroleum fluids and brines on wettability
    Selection of injection fluids for core flooding experiments on chalk samples from the relevant reservoirs
    Thermodynamic modelling of multicomponent ionic systems in relation to oil recovery
    Water based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) employs different techniques to optimize the flow of oil and to minimize the residual oil left behind by the water flooding of oil reservoirs. A thorough analysis and characterization of the reservoir fluids is required for optimizing these techniques. A molecular characterization of the reservoir fluids provides the link between well-established models for mixtures of simple molecules and improved models for reservoir fluids that consist of many complex components and ill-defined fractions. The characterization will be based on modern analytical methods including NMR, FTIR, HPLC, GC-MS to identify individual molecular components in reservoir fluids which consist of many hundreds of distinct compounds.
    Advanced molecular analysis will also provide information on polarity and functionality of fluid constituents which is not provided by standard oil characterization methods. This data will support mathematical characterization methods such as modelling of PVT properties and various lumping/delumping methods. In addition, the project will provide valuable input for rock surface chemistry studies, corrosion studies, core flooding experiments, and reservoir simulation. The team will be responsible for setting up the laboratory and assisting with the installation of instrumentation for analysis of oil samples from the Danish North Sea. Close collaboration with colleagues across the centre’s scientific themes as well as external partner institutions is an integral part of the work at the centre.

    Qualifications
    PhD students: M.Sc. degree in analytical or physical chemistry, chemical engineering or similar;
    Postdocs: PhD degree in analytical or physical chemistry, chemical engineering or similar;
    Exceptional skills in experimental chemistry;
    Interest in applied research;
    Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment;
