Laurea di II livello
AA 2007-08
Master of Science in
ENGINEERING OF COMPUTING SYSTEMS
Course history
● Politecnico di Milano is 130 years old
● One the most ancient technical universities in the world
● The Laurea Specialistica (Master of Science) degree started in 2005
“Important” People
● Dino Mandrioli, Dean of the School of Informationm Engineering
● Pierluigi San Pietro, Presidente (chair) of Computing Engineering Course
● Milena Dacrema, manager of the course
● Mauro Negri, chair of the “Piano di Studi” commission
● Danilo Ardagna, head of the tutoring activity
● Many tutors...
General organization
● 120 credits in two years.
● Two semesters per year (October-January, March-June)
● 100 credits in courses, 20 credits with a Thesis, to be discussed after completing all courses.
● Little number of mandatory courses (20 credits) if prerequisites are satisfied (but also some global costraints)

Bureacratic stuff...
● Examinations are in fixed dates per each course (e.g. two in February, Two in June-July, One in September).
● “Iscrizione” via a web application (Webpoliself) is mandatory at least a week in advance: TUTORS ARE READY TO HELP YOU
● Each year you have to choose the courses and then insert this choice : TUTORS ARE READY TO HELP YOU
● ...contact tutors first!
Organization of the studies
Study Plan
Typical Study plan– I year
● I semester

(*=mandatory)
Typical Study Plan– I year
● II semester
– Statistics *
– High Performance Processors and Systems
– Data Mining and Text Mining
– Formal methods for concurrent and real-time systems

– Laboratory (project work) (either Lab of Intelligenza Artificiale or Lab of Human Computer Interaction)
English Courses: II year
● Image Analysis and Synthesis
● Technologies for Information Systems (10 credits)
● Computer systems performance evaluation: techniques and applications
● Design and Analysis of Algorithms
● Model Identification and Adaptive Systems
● Two 2,5 credits courses

– NB: Most of these courses can also be taken during the first year.
Many tables...
● Table A foundational courses (typical for 1st year)
● Table B: specialistic courses
● Table C: small advanced courses, often doctoral-style (2.5 credits)
● Table LAB: Project work
● Table REC: undergraduate courses, typically chosen to fullfill missing requirements
2,5 credits courses
● Various 2,5 credit courses are offered in
English, often taught by visiting scholars:
– Advanced topics on analysis and design of critical systems
– Applications of discrete optimization
– Advanced topics on information systems a
– Argomenti avanzati di sistemi informativi b (in english, only the title is in italian)
Individual Study Plan
● You are free to choose other courses
– but most other courses are not in English!
● but you are not completely free!
Constraints on every study plan
● The following courses are mandatory:
– Foundations of Operation Research D, Formal Languages and Compilers, Operating Systems and
Software Lab, Statistics
– At least two among Software Engineering II, Databases II, High Performance Processors and Systems.
● One MAT course from Table A (Numerical Analysis is the only one in English)
● At least one course from Table B and two courses from
Table C.
● Globally, at least 45 credits in INF courses.
Individual Study Plan
Assessing your past career
Tailoring you admission
● In your past curriculum, you may not have taken courses that we consider mandatory for all undergraduates
● or you may have thaken courses very close to those offered here
● When you arrive, we need to assess your past career and assign mandatory courses (“Obblighi) and “forbidden” courses (Divieti)
Undergraduate Prerequisites
● Mathematics:
– Calculus, Linear and Abstract Algebra, Geometry, Mathematical Logic
● Computer Science:
– Databases, Software Engineering, Basics of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems, C and
Java programming, Network programming, Theoretical Computer Science
● Fundamentals of Telecommunications, Electronics, Automation
Missing prerequisites
● If some prerequisite is missing, you will be assigned one or more courses.
– This may or may not require extra credits
● Debito (D) = extra credit (beyond 120 credits), but the grade does not contribute to final average.
● Obbligo (O): they contribute to the 120 credits count and to the final average.
● Prerequisites are assessed by meeting the commission.
● You are advised to postpone prequisites to next year if only italian courses are available
Typical 5 credit prerequisites
● Algebra and Mathematical Logic
– English course, starting next week. Priority for Software Engineering 2
● Theoretical Computer Science
– English course, II semester, Priority for Formal languages and compilers, Formal Methods for Concurrent and Real Time Systems
● Equazioni Differenziali (Differential Equations)
– in italian (some material in English) II semester
“Forbidden” courses
● If in your past curriculum you have already taken courses close to those offered here, they
will be “forbidden”. You still have to complete
120 credits without them. Examples:
1.If you have already taken Numerical Analysis, it will be forbidden to choose it. You will have to
take another course (but the requirement on the MAT course will be automatically satisfied).
2.If you have already taken Formal Languiages and Compilers, it will be forbidded to choose it. You
will be left with one less mandatory course.
International Agreements
● Joint Masters with:
– University of Illinois at Chicago
– University of Reading, UK
– Georgia Technology Institute (GeorgiaTech), Atlanta
● Typical stays of one or two semesters in one of these institutions during the second year.
● These agreements are open also to foreign students (but visa, scholarships, money...)
