Yes, The J1 visa must be avoided as much as possible. If you get J1, then you have to return to your country for at least 2 years before you can get any other type of visa. For example, when you want to start working, you need H1B. If you're on J1, you will be in trouble.
Of course it is possible to get a "letter of exempt" from home country which indicates you have paid your dues and do not need to stay in your home country for two years. But since the laws in Iran are totally unpredictable, I strongly recommend you not to use J1.
Of course, if you want to be in US for a short while, then it might be ok.
