New post-study working permissions for PhD students
updated 20 Feb 2013
From April 2013 students studying for a PhD at LSE will be able to apply for permission to work for 12 months at the end of their studies. The new scheme is not yet open but is due to be introduced in April under the Tier 4 regulations (ie it is not a separate Post Study Work application - the time will be added to your study period). The details of the scheme are not yet finalised and some of the points below may change when the policy guidance is published but we understand that:
- you will have to apply for the additional 12 months before you complete your studies at LSE - ideally 60 days before (The completion date will be the date you are expected to receive your results in writing).
- you will need a CAS from LSE confirming that you wish to seek or take work in the 12 months after the end of your studies
- you will be required to formally keep in touch with the School during this period
- you will need to provide evidence of funds
- you will be able to take any kind of work - it will not need to be connected to your research
- you will be permitted to work full time from the date you complete your programme at LSE (if you have an application in process)
We will update our guidance as soon as the policy guidance is published (this may not be until April when the scheme is introduced).
