Hi everyone!
Here are my general suggestions to people who want to get a good score on this exam:
Learning a language is a time-consuming process. If your level of English is very low you need to consider a lot of time and practice to improve it. It does not happen overnight and there is no secret path to take!
I got myself involved with this language since around 8 years ago. However, I started studying it since I was a child. But, I watched lots of TV series and movies in the past few years, which helped my listening and speaking skills a lot.
For improving both readingand writing skills you need to read lots of academic texts. They do not need tobe only on scientific topics. For example, this website has many simplearticles on different topics http://www.thejournal.ie/
You can also see how ordinary people discuss over hot topics on websites like:www.debate.org
It is needless to say thatthe IELTS has its own particular structure that you need to get familiar with. That’s why I took 3 weeks off from work and only studied for the IELTS. I tookthe tests of Cambridge 5 to 9 (I wondered the previous ones were too old). Ialso studied the following book:http://www.cambridge.org/gb/elt/catalogue/subject/project/item405180/Cambridge-Vocabulary-for-IELTS/?site_locale=en_GB
It is good book to introduce you to common topics of IELTS as well as somenecessary vocabulary.
I listened to its recordings whenever I had time to get my ear familiar withBritish and Australian accent.
This is also a good book I think
http://www.cambridge.org/gb/elt/catalogue/subject/project/item404843/Common-Mistakes-at-IELTS-----and-how-to-avoid-them/?site_locale=en_GB
It also has an intermediate one.
During those 3 weeks ofstudying I watched lots of TED talks about common IELTS topics likeenvironment, media, etc. TED.com is a great website and is not blocked likeyoutube in some countries.
What else? Few days before my Speaking test I decided to record my voice. So, after I had prepared the answer to a part 2 question I recorded that. Then, I could listen to my recorded answer and recognize my pitfalls. It was really helpful. Two days before my exam I asked a friend of mine who speaks English fluently to ask me some recent speaking questions.
Finally, I would recommend you to get Simon’s e-book for practicing writing task 2 essays and go through his online free lessons which were my only IELTS tutor:-)
Good luck!
